I've got a Toshiba Satellite Laptop, bought it in September 2005. Anway, I'll get to the problem. When I try to play music in winamp I get a message saying: "No sound devices found. Please buy a soundcard first (or install proper drivers if you think that you have one). More info can be found at http://www.geocities.com/mmsystem002/ Error Code: 2 Windows Error Message: "A device ID has been used that is out of ranger for your system"" When I try to play music in Windows Media Player 11 I get a message saying: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly." And it's not only when I try to play music...my computer doesn't make any sounds whatsoever, not even sounds at startup, or beeping sounds when you click links etc.. I've spent hours trying to fix this....I don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi.... first lets check the Windows Audio service.... go to start then select Control Panel.... --->Administrative Tools --->Component Services --->in the left pane click Services(local) --->Scroll down to Windows Audio service then right click --->select Properties --->under Startup Type change to Automatic --->click Apply --->click Start --->Reboot hope it helps....
what is the version of your laptop ? Download this program and then run it, it will list your laptop devices.... could you please post the sound card the program finds with that info the sound driver for the sound card can be found....
also run a anti-spyware scan with AVG anti-spyware free version and do a system clean up with ccleaner
The only thing I could find having to do with sound was: Audio Adapter Intel 82801FB ICH6 - AC'97 Audio Controller Is that the soundcard?
post the output of this command: just copy paste into a terminal window. then we can simply insert the module with: but that command can change according to the soundcard type. now you can adjust the volume and "have fun".
oh wait i just realized you posted the sound card type. i believe your command as root would be: like i said, copy-paste. if you prefer an easy graphical way then use 'alsaconfig'. it will find the card for you. the AC'97 has really good support under Linux and BSD. i have a CMI87xx card on my Fedora Core 6 with 6 channel output and it sounds phenominal on my 6 channel surround sound system.
Adderall_Assasin nice thanks for the modprobe command did not know that one yet.... Swass I found a download link for the AC97 sound chip driver http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...3&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#1 but it is better if you post the Toshiba Satellite Laptop model name and number that way the driver can be found at the website of toshiba http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU hope it helps....
!!!! you didnt know that command?!?!?! ahhh, blasphemy!!! go read some command references, NOW. ahh. then: ^ that will show you the majority of your commands by the way.
modprobe -l | grep snd usually I use the grep comand to see what is running or to see which modules are loaded grep -i iptables /boot/kernel_config_file never used modprobe to load the sound module before always used alsaconf in slackware/debian
yeah, i have used alsaconf before too. it is very powerful, as it detects the soundcard for you. i used it in Suse many times, i think in slax too. i already know my sound card type so i can just insert it. but i only had to do that on my girlfriends pentium 2 laptop and my 600Mhz desktop which i dont use hardly. besides, the newer fedora cores dont have alsaconf anymore. modprobe will always be there for me. and btw, this symbol: " | " is called a pipe. hold shift and press the button above your enter key to get it. it takes the output from the first command and makes it the input of the next command. also, " && " will run two commands in one line. it runs the first command and then the second. the command programming will shut down gnome and start xdm on the first X display 0: (if installed). additionally, on my Fedora Core 6 system it will start up gdm on the second display 1:. very useful for switching between the two with one username. alt-ctrl-F7 and alt-ctrl-F8.
When you say "terminal window" do you mean like a browser? Firefox? Those commands take me to a message board...
crap, i just realized you have Windows. i thought you had Linux. those commands are for pasteing into a Linux terminal (command prompt). download your soundcard driver here. then find the file you just downloaded from this link and double-click it, finnally reboot your computer. this should get your sound working. if it doesnt, post back.
Swass, tell me your exact computer model and brand. tell any and every detail you can find in order. if you have to, flip it over and give me the model #'s on the bottom label. also, tell me exactly what operating system this is for, include type and service pack. (ex. Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2, build xxxx) also, reproduce your error messages and copy-paste them for me to see. i will know exactly whats going on.
Windows XP Home Edition Toshiba Satellite M40 - JM8 System Unit I can't really find anything else... ...just above my keyboard, under the monitor, it says "harman/kardon"...I'm not sure if that's any help. And in winamp I get this:
I know that this prolly wont help your machine much but my suggestion is to sell it and buy a mac G4 ibook. Problem solved. You really need to know your sound card model and find the right driver and install the drivers.
ok, according to the second (winamp) message, you have a sound card and driver installed but there is a conflict with what Windows thinks it is. its deeper than that but kinda irrelevant as the problem doesnt require text-book terminology. i wish i could remember exactly how to do this in windows. basically, you need to completely uninstall every sound card driver that has ever been installed. then you must find the device manager and completely disable the sound card. finnally you can find the right driver and install that. it should enable the sound automatically. honestly, i cannot remember how to get to the device manager. someone else here, with windows, maybe could elaborate on this for you. maybe try something like Control Panel >> Install New Hardware >> Soundcard >> Conflict Resolution. except i dont think its called 'conflict resolution'. if i recal it starts with the letter 'P'. idk.
