    Hi everybody,

I was thinking, is there any recordings of folk music from the part of the world in which you reside which you could recommend?

Just one from the top of my ahead when it comes to Sweden: Triakel. (http://www.triakel.com/) Their album "Sånger från 63° N" (Songs from the 63rd Latitude) is great.
And you've gotta hear Krauka! Both "Vikinga seiur" and "Stiklur". http://www.krauka.dk/

I'm tracking some Victor Jara (Chile) discs.
    I also appreciate Indian classical.

    drumminmama,
Have you heard Silvio Rodriguez (from Cuba)? I've actually only heard his song "El mayor", but I like that one very much. Björn Afzelius made a swedish version of that song which he called "Don Quixote", you should check that one out as well. :)

    WHERE DO I BEGIN?

I know I've gone and mentioned folk musicians outside of my part of the world, but oh my, just buy everything. Lose all your money in the process of listening to people like Ali Farka Touré (Malian blues and folk guitarist who suddenly died in March), Oumou Sangaré (Malian singer with one of the most amazing voices in the world), Geoffrey Oryema (Ugandan guitarist and singer who plays both contemporary western folk and traditional Ugandan music), Sain Zahoor (Sufi singer with great emotion - he is a Pakistani Sufi but he doesn't do Qawwali), Sevara Nazarkhan, Chango Spasiuk and bands like Tinariwen (Tuareg group who are becoming very popular) or famous British folkies Fairport Convention (that is if you haven't heard them already).

Just a few to get you started. Please let me know if you listen to any.

I can recommend a lot of southamerican Folkmusic: Chile has a (also because of the communistic "Revolution" lead by Allende and its suppresion) good deal of folk music which consists topics like suppresion, violence, political change, protest, but also hope for a better future. I can recommend Violetta Para (Gracias a la vida), Victor Jara (Luchin, El derecho de vivir en paz), Inti Illimani and Quilapayun. Furthermore I really like Leon Gieco from Argentina: He is/was on of the most importent protest songwriter during the different military "juntas".

You don’t know how happy I am, to learn that people interested in folk music know about the New Song Movement from Spain and Latin America, I see the names of Victor Jara, Violeta Parra and Silvio at this forum, I am also a member of the New Song Movement also known as Trova and I just posted a message with the song “A Candle” one of my songs in English

Thank you for you interest in the New Song or Nueva Cancion. If you would like to know more about this topic search the Internet Search engines for “New Song Movement” or “Nueva Cancion”.

    Thanks,

    Jose Luis Sepulveda

where i posted up a link to an LP from a guy called Manduka from Brasil. he plays guitar wonderfully, very simple but with so much passion. some of the songs are kind of dreamy, some jumpy and jovial.. i recommend you all give it a listen :)
