Here's my take on Scorsese winning the Oscar for Best Director (long over due)
Mr. Scorsese i believe is the only or one of the very few director who have lead
3 actors to the Best Actor Oscar and one for Best Supporting.
    Ellen Burtyn (Alice) in 1974
    Robert DiNero (Raging Bull) 1981
Paul Newman (Color of Money) 1986
    Kate Blanchet (Aviator) 2005

Also the last times he's been nominated he's lost to actors who turned to directing.
    Redford 1981
    Kostner 1991
    Eastwood 2005

So i find it very interesting that he's been great for actors
and in turn actors have ruined his chances for the Oscar for best director
    until yesterday.
He should have won for Raging Bull and Goodfellas.
That's my spin on Marty and the Oscars.

in the same idea... kubrick, orson welles and alfred hitchcock never won an oscar...ron howard and kevin kostner did...what is the importance of a recognition that forgets about such great artists and celebrates moneymaking as an achievement (i'm talking art...no ofense)

The producer of the Documentary won the Oscar not Gore.

Frank Capra , John Ford and Billy Wilder all great artists did win.
Those you mentioned should have won.
But in the frame work of Scorsese's films actors have done good by him and
    bad for him.
Just an Oscar analogy in reference to Marty.

I admit that I cheated and looked this up ...William Wyler holds the record by directing 13 Oscar winners...

Walter Brennan - Come and Get It (1936)
    Bette Davis - Jezebel (1938)
Walter Brennan - The Westerner (1940)
Greer Garson - Mrs. Miniver (1942)
Teresa Wright - Mrs. Miniver (1942)
Frederic March - The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
Harold Russell - The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
Olivia de Havilland - The Heiress (1949)
Audrey Hepburn - Roman Holiday (1953)
Burl Ives - The Big Country (1958)
    Charleton Heston - Ben-Hur (1959)
    Hugh Griffith - Ben-Hur (1959)
Barbra Streisand - Funny Girl (1968)

    ...that's a lot

i'm a young filmmaker and honestly nothing bores me more than the awards. there is so much behind the scenes politics and ass-kissing going on that what the academy deems 'best', and what really is best, are quite different things.

i think of it as little more than a chance for the hollywood elite to pat themselves on the back and have a glamourous party.
