heyy, im soo excited, i really want to get the dreads in.
i just learned how to back comb and make the dread properly. takes about 10-20 min a dread, but its worth it. of course the best way to dread is Wait or do it with now wax blah blah blah.

but i just backcombed a section of hair forlike 2 min and it started to knot up instantaneously, i made a small dread in a about 2 min, of course if i wanna do it good and make it look better ill work on it more, but i was just testing backcombing out.

i think backcombing is a GREAT method to get dreadlocks, i totally reccomend it.

TRY it and tell me what u think.

to those of u who are against it please tell me why.

i think it all depends on your hair type. I have had dreads for more than two years and I backcombed, some are awsome.. but some are just normal hair, its so soft it wont get knotty.

I'm not into backcombing, I've just seem some truely beautiful dreads that were never backcombed and I like how unique natural dreads are, take soaring eagles for example.

this how i look at it:)
im a teenager, i want dreads, i could either wait 2 yrs or 1 yr and do it the NATURAL WAY. or i could backcomb as soon as im ready for dreads, and get it over with in a day or two, with nice lookin CLEAN ORGANIZED dreads, i pick backcombing:)

but i could see why ppl like the natural way, without anything done to the hair, that fucking rules too!!! soaring eagles dreads, are amazing.

I'm sorry, but you can't have dreads in a day or two. Especially ones comparable to 2 year old natural dreads. Even if you backcomb, it will take time to actually dread up.

and it doesnt really take a year or two to do it naturally, Ive been locking for 6 months and yeah there a little messy, but they also distinctly look like dreads. And just for your reference, I'm a teenager too.

I backcombed a lot of my hair...some of it does look like dreads straight away. But it might fall out really easily too. Unless you're willing to spend 10-20 minutes on each dread every DAY, your hair will take its own natural course and do it's thing. this might mean they unravel and start over, they knot up in funky places, they stay fluffy and loose, whatever. They'll do their own thing. So just wait. I know they look nice now, but they'll go through the crap stage just like everyone else's.

I'm kind of for, kind of not. It isn't an instant way to get dreads...and if you do have dreads instantly then trust me...it's temporary. Yes, your hair looks knotty sooner...and it might be "finished" sooner. But it will still take time. My hair right now (at almost a month) is at about the same stage as a natural person's might be at roughly two months or more. (in some spots.)

^^ A step I've found is much more happily accomplished by disappearing into the woods one day and reemerging some time later as a dreadhead.

Yeah, pretty much. My hair knotted up really fast, though... :) I emerged to Babylon occasionally throughout the process, and was fond of passing out in the laps of friends and strangers, who I allowed to separate the clumps a little so's I wouldn't end up with uni-dread.

The first time I let my hair go, that was what happened. I was, for lack of a better term, living on the street in Portland. I kept my hair up in a hat, and didn't take it out or do anything with it for ages. Didn't look in any mirrors, I was too busy for those things. ;) One day toward the end of it all when I was ready to go back to responsible living, I took off my hat and had one big dread. That got shaved and I went a few years with <1inch, multicolored hair, before I decided to grow it out a bit and let it go again, "for real" this time. :) Good times, good times....

I'm not against it... I just have more respect for those who go the natural route and prefer the end result. To each his/her own.

wether u backcomb or not, u will end up going natural over time, its the only real way to go, backcombing just makes it look like u r farther along faster, but within weeks you'll be rifght back on the natural path anyways

what knot dirty said. i backcombed my hair both times ive had dreads and the first time, i tried to keep them looking neat and tidy, and let me tell you, it will take a couple hours out of every day of your life. it sucks. now, im just letting them do their thing after separating and backcombing once. the bottom line is, you will not get real dreads right away. its a very long process and they will look like shit for a while no matter what method you use.
