will no longer have their indian mascot....... I guess people found it too offensive... even though its a tradition at that school to have a dancing indian during halftime....

I wonder how many more schools, and professional teams even, will have to change the name of their mascots??

Im waiting for the KC chiefs to be turned into the chefs, or what they really should be called "the griefs"

I remember a school, from around where I grew up, that were called the hiawatha redskins....... they have recently changed it to the redhawks (there are quite a few indian reservations around that area)

 

our school used to be the red raiders
and then we were the rajun raiders
and now we are just raiders

but yeah, that was on the front page of our local paper since we aren't that far away

it's kinda sad

 

Some traditions should go away. I am glad they are getting rid of crap like that. Now I just wish they'd get rid of the mission style at my university.

Getting rid of Chief Illiniweck make no scense to me. The dance is a real dance that has ben done for many years. It is a dance to the Gods to wish for safety and guidence right before battle. The person that performs that dance at half-time actually has to go to a class and learn the proper way on how to perform the dance the correct way. It is a joke to how this society is becoming so sensitive to things that really that make no sence. There are so many other things to fight for. It is not a American Indian thing, it is a NCAA rule...............
