i know that you soak the jeans in bleach but the way that this article put it is way too confusing... can anyone help me out???
it's quite alright.. they're dark jeans that have been tied up in some way and set in bleach. basically spotted jeans...with the appearance of a pinto pony. their pretty amazing. =]
have you tried painting the splotches on? with bleach, I mean. just lay them out flat on plastic, put something inside so you don't bleach the front and back at the same time, and use a sponge or a paintbrush or anything else you can think of to apply the bleach where you want it. let them dry, then toss them in the wash. takes a little time for the bleach to do its work, but work it does!
Lay them out in the bathtub with an inch or 2 of water....then pour a bit of bleach in random areas. Wait until they look good, then rinse really well.
You might want to water the bleach down. I had a spot of bleach on a thick shirt of mine and even though it went through the wash a million times, there were eventually holes in place of the white spots.
something I just learned from a dyemaster on the reconstructed clothing tribe on tribe.net is to neutralize the bleach as soon as it's to the degree you want. she said if you rinse then, itwon't eat holes in your clothes. I guess just because I don't have holes in my shirts, doesn't mean I won't get them.
hmm, pinto pants are pretty awesome. with holes from continued wear & tear. just be sure you don't blow $50 on jeans. buy a cheap pair, like from the thrifties. and d.i.y. it yourself & you'll get a masterpiece in the end. i love making my own clothes, lol.
i found pinto pants at a store called marshalls, and i never ever saw them in another store ever again. im so glad i bought them, even tho they were too short and i had to let out the bottom seam :S
I know this is an old thread, but this is a direct entry from "The Hippie Handbook" on how to make pinto pants, if anyone is still interested. "1. Fill a bathtub with warm water 2. Add one cup of bleach 3. Knot the legs of a pair of dark blue jeans several times 4. Place the knotted jeans in water 5. Let them soak for two hours 6. Remove jeans, untie the knots, and place in the sun 7. Let dry" Hope that helps anyone that would like to make them.
I'd add the neutralization point (Tribers know their stuff) so before going in the sun, use Oxyclean (or other oxygen "bleach") or even hydrogen peroxide. Dilute vinegar works in a pinch, but do it OUTSIDE in fresh air because it makes a nasty off gas.
I love Marshalls. It's no wonder you found pinto pants there. Cool shit for cheap, if you buy last seasons clothes. I got a green flowly skirt for $5
I wish someone would make some and throw some pics up cause I would really like to see these. If I can find some jeans to do this with, than I shall post some pics.
