The arctic monkeys are massively over-hyped; a product of the post-libertines landscape in which we find ourselves. They are credited for singing about real life and have had huge British success due to an astonishing sheeplike internet / myspace following. However with the exception of their signature tune, 'I bet you look good on the dancefloor', which I might add is not bad, they are surfing atop the crest of a large wave of foundationless hype, due in large amounts to the fickle NME magazine. I would be extremely surprised if they produce anywhere near a palatable second album as all too quickly they have become stadium fillers, destroying the curve of natural progression that many successful bands take. If you like the first album and the hype has escaped you, then all credit to you and your taste. I really do feel though that they have peaked a little early, and that summit scaled was very much aided by the media and not sadly their material.
I saw The Arctic Monkeys play live last year. They were ok but nothing more. I quite like the album but do agree that they are over hyped. Saying that though I'd watch them again and will in June.
I've got their album and I've seen them live at Rock Werchter last year. They're quite good, but still over-hyped. The Libertines have never got the appreciation that Arctic Monkeys are still getting, but they're easily a million times better.
i saw them open for a major show in the summer. i must say, they were mildly entertaining to say the most.....and i had no clue of any "hype" surrounding them, my opinion was generated strictly on hearing their yawn of a performance when opening for a phenomal band. How they made the cut is beyond me.
Way over-hyped. Its a good album but for NME to declare Whatever They Say...as one of the best Brit albums of all time is just stupid. Besides, anyone knows that if a band isnt from the UK they have a slim chance of being on the top best 50 albums of the year on NME.
I don't know if they're over-hyped... who cares? Are they good? Well, I like them. They had to grow on me, but the more I listen the more I like. Some music in a somewhat similar vein that you might like... http://www.cavedoll.com Check them out. They've got a fun new video up too.
