So, hippies, I pose to you a conundrum.

I was reading the hate thread and was seeing how you all seem to think hate is unnecassary and what not. How love is the best thing to feel, the only thing you should feel.

But without feeling hate, how can one truly appreciate the feeling of love?

If you never hated, how can you truly love?

Love could not exist without it's counterpart, Hate. Something can not fully exist without it's opposite.

Sure, you can feel some species of love without hating, but it will never ever be as fulfilling as the love you feel after you have hate for something somewhere in your heart.

Just like you cannot know true happiness without out some pain, I believe you cannot know true love without some hate.

I hate most things, but it makes the things I love all the more meaningful.

I disagree with the root of your assumption.

The counterpart of love is not hate. The counterpart of love is loneliness, a lack of love, and so on.

I completely agree with your assumption though... no pleasure without pain, no dark without light, and so on.

Even if hate is the counterpart of love, then one does not need to perceive the hate from oneself. I can easily learn how to love with all of my heart just by seeing all the hate around me.

One doesn't have to feel death in order to appreciate life...

    Feel my drift?

See, I don't think that the counterpart of love is loneliness. You can feel love for something, and still be lonely/feel deserted by it. Love and lonleliness go hand in hand.

But you cannot hate and love at the same time. Sure, people claim to, but they really only feel one and try to cover it up with the other.

Okay, one does not have to perpetuate the hate to reap the benefits of complete love, but there does have to hate somewhere for it to work.

Without hate, love would be hollow and without meaning.

Maybe, but that's only because I hate you and want to spread the hate by mocking you. :D

    It works well, I think.

I have a hatred towards smelly socks, because that makes me have to do some laundry.

Isn't it better to be hypocritical and proclaim love when we really hate?

I don't know- the opposite of love isn't hate- but indifference.

    Hate is pretty pointless imo.

For myself- I see Love as inclusive, and Hate as exclusive- That simplifies things for me.

"Inclusive resolution of conflict" I was told, is Love. Exclusive would then be Hate.

This is why "God is Love" baffles some people, we can't understand how God allows some shit to go down. It is baffling. Sometimes I think myself into a knot and can't think anymore.

I agree, there has to be hate somewhere in order to strengthen love. Per example, I love people partly because they need the love to let go of the hate.

But I can tell you that there is not a single bit of hate in me, and I love, maybe even too much. There is nothing hollow in it and it defenatly has a meaning.

I honestly cannot see how hate can give love a meaning. Hate is such a false, unnecesary, unnatural emotion. Animals do not hate, only humans do. Hate is something that is conditioned upon us, while love is pure... love can be felt by any human even if that human is unaware of what love is.

I agree entirely, because I define love as caring. If you don't care about something, you are indifferent to its existence. Conversely, to hate is wishing destruction on someone or something, which very well may be warrented.

BTW. The book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
has an interesting take on this very subject.

love has no emotional opposite since its not an emotion but a condition of being thst hightens all emotion including hate

Love and Hate as emotions as opposed to rational ideas. Yes I know the feelings.

LAW says we can not act on emotion and strike out. REASON thinks "what goes around, comes around, Golden rule" etc

    The feeeeeeeeeeeeeelings!

I agree as well, that's a great way of describing it.

I've tried to read that book twice, yet both times I lost it because I was traveling. I did get through the first couple of chapters and loved it.

I need to buy it (for the 3rd time :D)

The method we use to resolve conflict can be used on us. "God is Love" God allows us to use our own method, individualy and in groups.

That's the way I think. I could be wrong.

I don't believe in original sin. I don't know how the spirit world gets off on killing kids. Untill you kill you can't be killed. screwy huh!? (obviously I have a lot to learn)
