Im sorry if I sound at all biased or delusional in anyway, but I just dont get rap/hip hop....yes for a time when i was like 8-10 I listened to some hip hop and rap....but as soon as I was introduced to classic rock and fully delved into the complexities and overall musical genious behind many of the bands and songs, I just dont understand how anyone could like rap.....not only is it now littered with songs that serve no purpose to this world (aka "in da club" and "its goin down")....but the fact that there is, for the majority, a person talking or "rapping" and a beat that someone created.....once again Im sorry if this offends anyone I just want to at least be able to understand this type of music...because at this point I just dont

i grew up listening to all sorts of music rap/hip hop was one of the main ones the other being early rave music and of course bands aswell. As you said alot of it nowadays is bullshit but like any genre you have to sift through rubbish to find the good stuff, and there is some good stuff about but its hard to find.

I personally nowadays listen to concieous rappers talkin about things that are happening and affecting us some rappers have real dialogue and meaning to what they are trying to portray. being from the uk i listen to alot of uk stuff and some of it is as deep and powerfull as when i sit an listen to an acoustic set by my fave band.

just thought i had to reply as too many people see and hear rap as shitty cent or some bollox they hear on radio1.

    laterz...........

alotta people have this problem, they just dont have a good connection to it anymore, the music itself as grown so wide and far that its often left many of its old school fans in the dust, its changed just like every genre of music does through the generation it either adapts or it dies out, and Hip Hop is still clinging on.

I recently read an interview of a veteran of the genre and it opened my eyes alot, it exposes the heart and soul in what goes into creating real music from people who believe respect and live to create coherent, beautiful thaoughtful music without losing its fanbase or in the process alienating them

Check out the interview here http://www.hiphopgame.com/index2.php3?page=gza
its an interview with "Gza (Genius)" One of the founding fathers of modern hip hop and the Wu Tang Clan, it says alot about his last current album "Grandmasters" (Which is amazing as well by the way) it also explains several pages of what the state of hip hop music is in today and offers a solution

Music is music, no matter how complex or simplistic it is. To me, it doesn't matter how the music is made or how much effort to took to make it.

No, but they are also connected quite intimately

I'll give ya a simple version

Classical Rock or any form of rock or metal came from one source, That is Blues and African Music.

Hip Hop was also created from blues, from the blues it branched off into gospel, from gospel to Big Band and Crooners, from crooners, to Soul and R&B, from R&B to Funk and Disco, it was during the funk and disco days that around the NY underground Dance scenes DJ's began expirementing by taking a page from current reggae music, while mixing the sounds and drum beats of the funk music such as James Brown.

In da club is to rap as some poppy rock song is to rock.

There is lots and lots of good rap out there, it's just that people who don't listen to hip hop don't know where to look for it and have never heard it so they just write rap off as not being music.

You also need to understand that hip hop doesn't concern itself with the music like rock or other types of music does. The beats are an afterthought to the lyrics, whereas I would say the opposite is true for rock.

One suggestion: Listen to A Tribe Called Quest, then Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, then Handsome Boy Modeling School, and come back to us.

There is some good rap out there you just got to find it. Its not all about in da club or ass shakin and hoes... Check out Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks...
Mostly the "rap" and the hip hop you see on tv isn't mainly about music its about making money. Look deeper, you may just find something you like.

I don't claim to like it for any soulful or sentimental reason. I like it because it sounds cool. Back in the day the rappers didn't give a fuck about what anyone thought about them. They just got up on the mike & said what they had to say regaurdless of the media, censors, all the other fags out there. And I respect that. It's differnet now of course, All that's left mostly is this awful Pop-rap & R&B shit.

    I don't like rap/hip-hop, but I think I can give a basic answer anyway...

I don't think there's really anything to get - either you like it or you don't. If you do, that's fine. If you don't, that's fine.

In my opinion any true lover of music will find some hiphop to there liking if they give it an honest chance. That dont mean you have to of course.

Try Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious. If you are able to hear all of his lyrics it will blow your mind in a way no other type of "poetry" can or ever has before.

K-OS is also a favorite of mine, he said in an interview how Radiohead was the best hip hop out there nowadays... you do the math on that one.

And I feel the need to mention Styles of Beyond, one of the most underrated/unmentioned lyricists out there, with a darker style.

    Peace~.

Rap is amazing to hear when its good. You wont ever hear any artist with talent on the radio or tv. Those people who run that shit dont know anything. There are lots of artists who wont ever get the chance to go public like some, nor do they want to. I tell you this there is some amazing music out there people dont know about. Sadly what the media shows is how this society judges, so it seems.

what you see on the radio or tv, if you judge rap by that...

    Your igorant sorry
