About 4 months ago I threw out my tv because I felt like all I was doing was laying around and watching it. I never got anything done and so we got rid of the tv. Its amazing how advertizing and all that crap isnt shoved down your throat all the time. Everythings better since we sold the tv. I just wanted to share.

    well done!

    I've done a couple of times, a 3-6 months-long-tv break..and it felt like a brain's release..

I find your accomplishment quite amazing.

The longest I've ever been away from the groove tube, was two weeks when I was on vacation camping out and had no access to a television set :H

Good for you! Congrats...Sometimes, when I hear someone eyes get opened like this I think about the sci-fi movie They Live...All those messages saying 'SLEEP.'
I hate television. Never watch it anymore.
    I do watch movies.
I will cop to renting a few choice television programs on discs, but they come without the commercials.

A television is basically an advertising machine, and so is most radio. My TV is set up only for watching videos. My radio is turned either to CKUA or CBC, both of them ad-free publicly supported stations here in Alberta, Canada. I find that a large proportion of American network TV stations insult my intelligence with cop shows and car chases.

A man without a television is like a fish without a bicycle.

Thankfully, I grew up without TV, so I've never had the problem of trying to quit... occasionally I'll go to someone's place and they'll just sit and watch the tube... and what a truly awful thing it is! My stepmom watches cop shows in the evenings and when I'm upstairs making myself some dinner, the sound of the advertising coming from the next room is enough to make me sick, and the dialog in the shows...

Yeah, I want your opinions on this, guys. I find that I can't talk to my stepmom because she talks like someone from a tv show or commercial or movie - she doesn't speak like a real human being, and this REALLY disturbs me! When I was living up north with farmers and fishermen, I got used to people speaking normally, and when I got back to the city, I found lots of people are like my stepmom. Just completely brainwashed by television, and add to that the high school mentality that so many people seem to be stuck in in the city, always trying to impress... somebody with personalities that fit like four-fingered gloves. RRrrr! I need to get back to the country...

    Anyway, feedback on this?

How does someone "talk like someone from a TV show?" I don't understand. Is she interupted every 12 minutes by a commercial or something?

Sometimes people who watch really depressing stuff, like pig shows, all the time, they are depresssed. But, there isn't anything you can do about it.

I still don't know what you mean, though.

    this is a great topic.

i haven't watched for a few years now, though i've always had a set to accomodate dvds.

my closest friends are of the same mindset. if we have free time we prefer to spend it getting stoned in the park and feeding the ducks or other such simple (and ad-free!) pleasures that let your thoughts run free. a new guy moved into our flat and he watches hours upon hours of it. strange coincidence perhaps, but the rest of us find his personality quite obnoxious and lacking in substance. he kinda talks like someone on tv too...

My brother just moved in with me and now we have cable t.v. It bothers me.. Everyone wants to sit and watch t.v all the time..If my son is doing his chores he gets side tracked by t.v. and it is just loud and negative. Once in awhile i like to watch a movie or something but other than that i don't like it. One thing is that i dont like negative that is on the news when it is on...I found a website happynews.com i thought was pretty cool. I like to be surrounded with postive air and the news on t.v. is so negative!

Great job, a tv is awfully unnecessary. I haven't watched tv for many years now... I truly no longer miss it.
