Add some vitamin E to your salt water mix or tea tree oil. Or switch to a shampoo that has tea tree or vitamin E.

i love my dreads but im thinking off getting rid of them and growing my hair then doing them again in a year or so because my hair doesnt grow longer at this point due to the dreadage. my question: how do i go about it without turning to the scissors.. CAN my hair be salvaged?

I've heard that repeated VO5 hot oil treatments will cut down on the amount of hair you will have to inevitably cut.

yes, it probably can be salvaged. Get some hemp conditioner and cover your dreads (or just a few actually...they take quite a while to comb out) It also helps if your hair is wet. Take a metal comb and slowly pick at it

Don't get me wrong cuz I love Dr.Bronners but it can leave a residue in my experience so watch out. It might just depend on which one you use. I always liked peppermint the most but sometimes it seemed to leave a thick white residue. Maybe I wasn't diluting enough..

No wax though! A complete waste of time. Especially for new and developing dreads.

Well IMO if your dreads are newish, you are not seeing length just yet, cause they are still eating up and knotting the hair, new growth too. BEEEEE Patient, LOL if they are newbies ;)
I know I know harder done than said, but still you will have some phatty ass dreads in a year or so if you just leave em! ;)

Again just my opinion, but hell if you wanna murder them go for it, its your head!

I'm sitting here at this moment with half a head of dreads and half a head of tiny little sectioned off pony tails.. lol.. and I just wanted to know if there was any advice about getting baby thin hairs to dread better, because last night after having everything go so well my friend tried dreading the hair closer to my temples which is just SUPER thin (ew) and they don't want to do anything but frizz up into a ball. Lol. I think it looks kinda funny, but not at all dreadie. I don't know if because the hair is so thin the flea come just isn't fine enough to knot the hairs up a little or what but ya I have a big ball of fuzz to the side of my field of vision.. any advice would be smashing!

I used a flea comb on the main dreads, but had the same prob. I found that using a plastic lice-comb helped a lot as the teeth are closer together than the metal ones. Backcombing the fine hairs when damp also helped, and a bit of twist n rip to keep it from slipping back out again. It might need redoing every so often until it locks, if it bothers you, but it worked a treat on mine! ;)

Awesome, thanks so much. It doesn't bug me too much since I know my little dreadies are going to be fuzzy and stubborn for a while anyway, but I thought I should start trying to get those little devils in with the rest right away. I figure it will take me a bit of time.

Hello Everyone, I have a dread thing going on that I'm hoping ya'll can help me with. I had my thick greying curly hair dreaded just 2 months ago. I love them, but presently we're having "getting to know you" issues. The stylist who did my hair put them in very tightly wound rubberbands and now that I've taken the bands out (say 2 weeks ago) I can see that the base of my dreads are not knotting. The length of them are dreading up pretty nicely because my hair's wanted to dread all its life, -yay I finally gave into the inevitable :) but I got these one inch "poofs" of hair at the base of many dreads. I've tried rubbing them both clock and counter clock wise, and rubbing them between my fingers. Since I've had the bands out such a short time I know it'll take a while for my dreads to recover, but does anyone have advice on how I can help along?

I've kept wax in my hair too but after reading these posts I'm going to pass on it for a while and see how the other side lives :) I wash my dreads about every 7 to 10 days with DreadheadHQ.com soap (sorry can't linky) and palm roll really often.

Thanks for any help anyone has to offer.

    Hi,
Nice to see a fellow grey-haired dreadie! They're arent many of us it seems.
First of all Im assuming your hair isnt afro. Did they put the bands in at the root and tips, or all they way down? My hair is like yours, though I didnt use any wax, and a little clockwise root rubbing whilst wet knotted up my roots easily enough.
Did you get all the wax out, maybe that's why its not working. All i can think of.

Yeah, after years of using products and spending too dang much time in the morning on my hair, I finally decided enough was enough and got the dreads I'd been contemplating for years. Wonderful dreads, love them <3

So yes, my hair and the rest of me is of European desent. The stylist put the bands just at the roots and I'm thinking that since they were so tight, new growth was restricted from getting to mingle. I'll try rubbing the roots while they're wet, that might just do the trick. As for the wax, I did get it all out and now that my dreads are nekked, they're just crazy, lots of loose hairs and trying to unite with their neighbor. I'll keep rolling and rubbing - this period has been good for my arm strength - takes like 2 hours to get my whole head done. :)

Thanks so much for your help my fellow greying dreadie - we are a rare breed!
