I was just curious, I know about a school devoted to art, about 3 hours away from where I live, but I have also found an art program at a university only an hour away. Would it be better to go to an art school, or just get an art degree at a nearby school?

I know it's my decision, I was just wondering which one would help me with my abilities more.

I don't know for sure about this college stuff, it always confuses me. But I think when you go to a university you are more likely to get a job afterwards because it shows you are well rounded or something.. like the kind of degree it is I think..? Whereas art schools usually aren't like that. I know I'm not making any sense but I don't know the words for it!!

But yeah thats one reason why I'm going to a university for art instead of an art school. I mean it varies but ya know. You can always transfer..

my fiancee goes to school at a university (Humboldt State in CA), and we have an excellent art program. In fact, art is the largest major here. he likes it alot. he has learned drawing, figure drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, jewelrymaking, and even printmaking (lithography, etc). its awesome. i dont think it matters where you go as long as the university you choose has a strong art program... look at their course catalog and find out what classes they offer.. or go talk to the head of the art department. :)

i went to art school in an art town . that's the best . the whole town was art school . art school is community , and you go mostly to be with other artists a few of who are teachers . art is to communicate , to commune .

I am in the same boat you are. Right now, i go to a community college... but I can't decide if i want to go to pnca (an art school in portland oregon) or go to portland state university and enter their art program... ahh. its too stressful for me.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I would like to get the best art training I can, but I don't want to get too far from home, for medical reasons, among other things. I wish this was easier to decide, buit then again, nothing ever worth deciding on is worth it.

Go and check them all out before commiting yourself. The best advice an old fool like me can give you is not to compromise yourself. If you feel that happening, get the hell outa there! Art is a personal statement and any institution that stifles that in any way is to be avoided like the plague.
You are in charge at this stage,go where you feel most comfortable.Art is more important than an academic qualification I.M.H.O.

It depends on what you want to major in and do with your degree. If the university has a great art program and offers fine arts degrees then go for it. I know that around here you have to go to an art school.

I want to be a freelance artist, just sell my work for a living. What kind of degree would that require?

    None.

You just have to be able to find your niche you know?

My brother went to the Art institute in Pittsburg and now he's building decks for a living. A degree garuntees you zilch.
You just need to be able to market yourself and do what you love, which is expressing what is in you.

I never went to art school and I sell woodburnings and scratchboards as fast as I can make them. They move by word of mouth.

You either got it...or you just want to have it

Not trying to talk you out of school or anything, I'd have gone if I had thought about it when I was younger. I am sure you can pay them to teach you alot of really useful stuff and it would give you a good social base to network from...like all the other artists that graduate from there.
