It is strange and somewhat disturbing to read about some people trying so hard to have dreadlocks, when matting of the hair comes naturally if you just stop brushing or combing it. In fact, it has been around for thousands of years, and was a result of a quest for greater and truer spirituality, a practice designed to eliminate excessive self consciousness by "not being vain", and paying so much attention to physical appearances, and just letting yourself "be". Instead now there are hair parlors dedicated to "locking the hair", as if it was just another cool style for anyone, reagardless of what it means, and not a result of a spiritual practice, and so I guess it has somewhat lost its original signifigance as a sign of a person who spends his time pursuing a higher spiritual calling, and not his or her "hair-do".
abe very well said...and hebrew.,. straight hair locks fine wax prevents locking it just holds it in clumps but doesnt allow it to move and lock, locking requires movement which wax prevents... no hair will ever really lock as long as its a candle not hair.. let it go
Did you go to knotty know how? It's basically all the decent advice on locs. http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97395 I understand wanting to have some control starting them, and I know people are going to argue what's "real" and "natural." I had a cluster by accident, I left braids in and noticed the tops dreading (think skinny pencil baby dreads) so I unbraided, backcombed the rest (and that took a LOT of length away, be warned.) and palm rolled a lot as a new habit. one was big enough for a bead with a husky pencil (remember your first grade fat pencils?) sized opening. I'll tell you the "best" dreaded part was under that bead, so I'd leave it for a week or so, slide it up, then a week later slide to a different nubbly part. they did well enough to srat pulling fair from outside their area, and I made the not easy decision to not allow that (I never meant to have any dreads: I sometimes wonder about that decision. Ah, so I 'll redread when I'm elderly) Now, get thee to Knotty Know how: http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97395
