What progressive band moves you the most? I would have to say Dream Theater. They have brought me to feel pain, joy, sorrow and love all within one song. Yours?
Does emo mean any emotional metal or is it in reference to the emo genera? Because I have to say emotion is metal... Upper middle class strife is not.
Um, the topic title is a joke. It has nothing to do with my post. The only thing emo about Theater is LaBrie. So, yeah. . . METAL!
You've gotta be careful what you put in titles, some people don't read the messages that follow. I'd say the little chinaman is the the most emo, but who would know? he hardly ever talks. I like some dream theatre. I hate how people put them on a higher level than any other band though.
I'm not really into progressive rock and metal, but one of the exceptions is Ayreon. If you haven't heard of it and you like progressive metal you really should check out the albums Into the electric castle and The dream sequencer/Universal migrator. Dude, every music is emotion. That's why emo sucks as well. The name of the genre is very incorrect since it isn't by far the most 'emotional' music genre.
- Dream Theater are good and yeah, they are a little over-rated at times. - Arena (British prog metal band) also have songs which are pretty dam amazing and have potential to move the listener such as 'Chosen' and 'Opera Fanatica'. - Transatlantic (members of Arena and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater) are fucking AMAZING. 'All of the above' (a 30:59min long track) more than goes to prove my point. - Symphony X are a band that can leave the listener with mixed emotions with amazing time signature changes, influential solo work and drumming which could possibly put Portnoy to shame. ..but my favourite has to be Liquid Tension Experiment. John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater's current project. All instrumental, more texture than any prog band I've heard before; Christ almighty - download 'Acid Rain', 'Paradigm Shift' and 'When The Water Breaks' and catch this vibe.
It's actually Pete Trewavas from Marillion, not Arena. Roine Stolt is from The Flower Kings which are also an incredible prog band. Good choice on LTE.
Fuck, my apologies... It's not Arena, it's members from; Dream Theater Marillion Spock's Beard The Flower Kings. :- Stolt-Morse-Portnoy-Trewavas Brilliant, either way.
Who's the dude in your picture? He has a swastika on his head. I like this. Um, I'll go with Solefald. Great, weird music. Especially the album In harmonia universalis. They're 'post/avant-garde-black metal' but that album has very little to do with black metal. Also, who could forget Enslaved? Monumension is a fantastic album, and it's sort of like what it would have sounded like if the Grateful Dead were a metal band. I don't listen to much progressive metal beyond that. And neither is very emotional, at least not the way it's meant in this thread. Every music IS of course emotional, but these two bands are not sad or something. The most emotional (in the 'sad' sense) metal song for me is Sear me III by My Dying Bride.
Has any of you prog metal fans already bothered to check Ayreon out? If you like bands like Symphony X, Marillion and Dream Theater you might wanna, cause the singers from all those bands sang also on Ayreon albums. It's basically a one man band of Arjen Lucassen, he makes conceptalbums with lots of guest musicians. He even had Bruce Dickinson to sing for one son. I bet the topicstarter don't know what she's missing. I really recommend the albums Into the electric castle, The dream sequencer and The universal migrator.
