a friend was telling me that the movie 'garden state', which is currently here in limited release in california, was one of the better films to come along in a long time. has anyone seen this movie? any thoughts? i would love to hear an opinion on it before i go out and search for it.

I saw Garden State last night and really enjoyed it. its one of the better movies to come out this year. Natalie Portman and Zach Braff are brilliant and endearing.

it does get long toward the end though, but the movie more than makes up for it.

this was the best movie ive seen in some time. what i loved most about it was that it glorified nothing. it basically worked the way a real life experience worked, and the inconclusive end was fabulous: nothing earth shattering happened and there was no exceedingly happy ending where everything worked out. also, it took place right in my backyard, and even scrolled past my old highschool (columbia highschool)

I didn't like it. Natalie Portmans character has become a stock character, so it felt like a clone of other movies. Also the cloaths they wore bugged me by looking so out of place. But I was told the movie was a comedy like Scrubs, so I went in with the wrong attitude.

What was wrong with their clothes? I don't understand...

I liked it although it wasn't genius or anything. But since this is his first movie, I think it is a damn good first movie and Zach Braff has a lot of potential to become a great writer/director/actor.

I'd really like to see it, even though i'm a tad afraid it will turn out to be something trying really hard to 'capture the drugged spirit of the generation'; or, "look at this intrigueing camera angle...that's right, I have risked so much and dared to be symbolic!" or, "look, this is deep, and profound. REALLY, it is."

But I will have faith and go see it with an open attitude.
