When I lived in the city our biggest health food store had a "vegan bar" that served this:

Cut tempeh into squares, then cut the squares diagonally into triangles. Saute in your choice of oil until lightly brown. Then, put a triangle into a warmed half of pita, top with vegan mayo and a big bunch of alfalfa sprouts.

lol... Did you ever find something SDL? I've never done anything with tempeh - eaten it in others' cooking a couple times (long ago) and liked it. I'm in the market for a good recipe that Ian and I will both like... :)

there are a bunch of tempeh recipes here and here - not all are vegan (but that's because they include honey, which you can easily omit/subsitute for). Good luck converting people to the marvel of tempeh!

side note - oh man, looking at some of these recipes was a biiiig mistake. I'm so freaking hungry now :)

Tempeh is great in stir fries, but the best traditional use is of course the Indonesian dish, Gado Gado. Basically veggies steamed topped with spicy peanut sauce, egg (optional), bean sprouts and of course tempeh (usually fried).

We probably have a recipe for it somewhere here, just do a search on the forum.

My favorite tempeh dish is tempeh spaghetti. Just cook it like you would with meat- noodles, organic sauce, tempeh, and some veggie cheese to top it off.

try this recipe, it's my favorite, you can also turn it into a game! Great for kids!

take tempeh, slice into octagons with a razor blade. soak in rubbing alcohol for 3 nights before the new moon. hide razor blade in one and broil them to brown.

whoever gets the razor blade and doesn't die from the rubbing alcohol WINS!

How about this, then. Prepare (slice, fry) tempeh as before, place in corn tortilla, top with chopped tomatoes and lettuce and some Pace salsa, and call it a taco! The tempeh has a texture similar to meat, and you're mostly going to taste the salsa, anyway. :)

Hey, it's no worse than using TVP to make chili con "carne", and that works on the majority of omnis.

I have much more of an appreciation for Tempeh than I used to. The texture is really great. I recently went to a restaurant in Atlanta and had a delicious Asian-style Tempeh and quinoa.

I think marinating and saute might be key.

This Mexican restaurant I frequent makes amazing burritos and quesideas with tempeh.

I remember I had a mango blueberry tofu and black bean burrito there once. and I imagine using tempeh in place of tofu would be amazing. I know that buritto sounds crazy but it was insanely good. Part of it is this spice or something that they add to all their dishes. I am not sure what it is, but no matter what I have, I always taste it. Everything is fresh and local and purchased daily, which also adds to the taste for sure.

I have had really good five alarm tempeh burittos too.
