I had a horrible experience with depo. My whole body changed, my attitude towards life changed and I became very tired and moody. I didn't link this shot I got 5 years ago to my horrible periods, low sex drive and carrying so much weight around my stomache when the scale says I am of normal weight. I just wanted to share this link I found as I know a lot of other people in this forum have been affected and may not contribute current health problems to shots from several years ago. http://htmlgear.tripod.com/guest/control.guest?u=shellyborsits&i=1&a=view
depo-provera is a very scary drug. Some of the side effects can be permanent, including infertility. After reading the package insert and patient information sheet, I chose not to take it based upon my prior horrible experiences with other hormone medications. Does that website also mention the unethical testing of the drug on women in third-world nations?
I am afraid of the infertility. I have had so many miscariges. I've also had three abortions, all within the first 6 weeks and all three times I didn't need the first part of the procedure because there was no adherence to the uterine lining. I would have miscarried in a matter of days. Luckily I am a solid believer in adoption and am unsure if I even want kids through adoption. I do not understand why the fda allows these horrible drugs that ruin and sometimes end women's lives to stay on the market. I mean I know why-money and lobbying...but I don't know why or understand how fda officials can be so uncaring. It's more important in our society to research drugs so old men can get it up rather than ones that prevent unwanted and potentialy mistreated kids.. What really scares me is that the shot is given to teens.
i gained 40 pounds in 14 months on Depo, and went up 2 sizes. i was last due to get it begining December ive been having black discharge and odd feelings in there.
I went on it once. It shot me into a three month long bout of PMS. My poor family. I never took it again.
Studies released in 2004 show that Depo Provera is associated with a loss of bone density resulting in an increased risk of osteoporosis. The bone loss appears not to be reversed when the woman goes off Depo Provera. Depo is not recommended for long term use and especially not recommended when the young woman is still growing her bones. Women on Depo are advised to exercise and take in plenty of calcium. If you have taken Depo Provera for more than two years, you might want to get a bone density test. (see article on Building Healthy Bones and factsheet on calcium-containing foods )
I hated being on Depo, but my symptoms disappeared within a year of getting off of it. I lost the 45 lbs, and I had a baby afterward, even though the reason I was given teh Depo was supposed to have resulted in infertility. Many womyn DO have babies after taking Depo, (I have more clients I can count who have) but, it is not a drug to be taken lightly. Anyone going on a drug which is this powerful, and lasts SO long in your body should do mountains of research before allowing that first injection.
I was on depo for a year, gained about 20-25 lbs and was pretty much a rageing bitch when I was on it, although I did stop mainly because of the bone density thing. I already have arthritis, a herniated disc and hip problems as it is, I'm only 25, I didn't want to potentially add a cause of pain and discomfort.
My shot expires in 2 days. I'm not taking it again. I'm a HORRIBLE person with my boyfriend. We fight constantly. I'm always tired and feel sluggish. I get depressed and cry so freaking easily. Before the shot, I was fine. I've bled pretty much 3 months straight. I can't eat a cookie without getting another inch around the waist. It's just terrible. I'm definitely unhappy with it.
((((((((((((Moon Flower))))))))) I hope you feel better soon. It may take 3 months or more after the "last day" of the shot's effectiveness for the side effects to start to wane (I didn't bleed at all on Depo, and it took 6 months after my last shot to get my period back.) It may take up to a year to feel yourself again. But, refusing the next shot is a good choice. I hope you recover soon. It can be a nasty drug.
I have been on depo for a year. I am in my window for getting the next shot, but i am not going! Since beginning the drug, I have bled non stop for a year straight. I have hair loss, gained some weight, even working out 6 days a week and eating right I cannot drop it, and I am carrying the weight around my middle, which I have never done before, usually it's the rear and thighs. Now its my stomach. With the bleeding, there is NO desire for sex, it's so gross and annoying! I've ruined countless pairs of panties, and bed sheets. I am also depressed. I can't wait for the effects to wear off. We have decided that if I get pregnant, then so be it. I am 37 and if it's meant to be then let it happen. I am glad to find some place I can come to vent. Thanks for that!
i hated it. i spotted the whole time. had not sex drive. and lost 15 lbs. the worst thing is that alot of girls in my town get it and dont know the risks. i didn't until i researched it luckily i stopped after the first shot
p.s. I'm lossing weight. I've been going to the gym and making lifestyle changes. I choose depro b/c I got tired of threatening my boyfriend with breaking up every month when I pms'ed. Doctors would not help me with this but said it was normal. I'm not so sure it is. I feel crazy and out of control when I pms and I don't want to hurt my love ones anymore. So I choose depo. Just to get out of the cycle.
I've actually bounced back pretty quickly. I haven't lost but 5 of the pounds I gained on it, but my sex drive is back, I don't feel like a slug, and I'm not constantly hungry. Seriously, I'd rather have back the gross early pregnancy feelings than feel like I did on the shot. I'm leaning towards the pill again, but a monophasic instead of the tri-phasic, and DEFINITELY not Ortho Tri-Cyclen.
