You know, even though I don't have any money at all, when I buy clothing for myself, I can understand when something is more expensive for more fabric. It's when it's WAY more expensive that I have a problem. And if the fabric costs more for larger sizes, then it should be divided throughout the different size clothing. Each size should cost different amounts, or they have no right to charge the "larger" clothes more. And a size "0" should cost a little less, because they use less fabric. But that isn't going to happen, so I can't agree with things quite the way they are. I'm rambling, aren't I? I'm just depressed about the clothing thing. It sucks. And bras. Geez, in a 50H bra and I can't buy one anywhere. All of mine are dead or dying. It really sucks. Bad. *sigh* Okay, done ranting... sorry.

Yeah, I totally get what you girls are saying. I used to have a huge problem finding things that fit me that I liked. Which I totally don't understand because most women are not a size 2. Either way, I've never been upset about having to pay a bit more IF and only if the clothes are homemade. If some huge corporation makes them, I don't understand why you'd have to pay more. I get in theory, but really, do they NEED my extra $10?

No joke. I mean, if WalMart charged extra for larger clothes, I would never shop there again. Oh, wait, I don't shop there now *lmao*

I get why people charge more for MY size, but for something that won't take but a few extra inches of fabric, I don't get it...

Still searching like crazy for clothes. Found some really cool yahoo groups that might be of help, but who knows? I could be nekkid before I even get totally signed up with them all hehe.

I will be sewing soon (I hope), and if I get a chance, I'll be posting pics... Wish me luck!

Unkle John is right. I just recieved an email back from his wife saying that she would be able to make maternity hippie clothes for me without extra cost. Yay!

A wonderful resource that I've found is Freecycle-just join up your local group, offer something you don't want on the board for someone else to take, ask for clothing in the sizes you need. even if the clothes are awful, there are your raw materials for free! In my local group, plus size clothing flies around between members, and the givers say that giving away large size clothing is as hard as finding it in the first place! One lady offered some size 56 pants-she bought them for her husband and he hated them, wouldn't wear them. now what does she do with them? tags still on and all, 3 years later he still won't wear them, so she offered them on the Freecycle board and made someone really happy!
I was in need of a sewing machine because my cat peed on mine and shorted it out. I posted my need, and the next day I had a sewing machine and a cabinet. people ask for and give away all sorts of stuff, firewood, cereal her kids wouldn't eat, patterns for square dance clothing--

having worked in a thrift store i can say that it's not the store's fault. they usually put out all plus size clothing they receive....there's just very little of it that comes in in the first place and the demand is very high. When i start getting into sewing a little more i wont hesitate to make plus sized clothing...it sucks that i can rarely find things my own size, when im not even plus sized at all...so i can't even imagine what it's like for heavier set people.

Oh of course, totally. Thrift stores put out everything they get - I'm sure there isn't a room of stash that they just won't put out! ;) The problem is with retailers, in stores where it IS possible to make/carry/sell plus size items but either won't or charge extra for it.

Dang, you must have an AWESOME Freecycle where you are. I am listed in my town, and in 4 surrounding towns, and I've posted the need for clothing and NADA. Not even one email. Kind of difficult I think, to find this item. I know I've been chatting with a bunch of hippie sewing chics, and they all said the same thing. Plus size rarely sells. I know with the demand, you would think it would sell like crazy, right? Well, it seems like most of us have given up on finding clothing, so we don't search as much... and the plus sizes they have kinda go to waste... I know a few places can't keep plus sizes in. GO figure! I've been all OVER the web looking for plus sizes (hopefully used and really inexpensive) and they just don't exist... Not in this area, and other areas are loooow on them.

A few ladies have suggested that we talk to Weight Watchers groups (they loose weight and have the clothes left over) or similar groups to this. Personally, I didn't have much luck with this one.

There are other suggestions out there, when I find that email, I'll post them all!

Good luck you all! I hope you find what you are looking for. Maybe we need to find a group for this kind of thing, or make our own site... any thoughts? Which site? ((HUGS)) and lots of love to y'all!

    Michelle

I make plus sized clothes and don't charge extra for the added time and fabric it takes to make them. I think a lot of the people that do custom clothes offer the same service though I could be wrong. I have made a few apron skirts recently and just finished up a wrap skirt for a 3x mama that was all patchwork. check out my Gallery or PM me if your interested.

I WISH I could sew my own clothes. One day I plan to learn but I share a TINY room with a roommate which acts as a bedroom/study/kitchen/dining room so no room for materials or a sewing machine. Maybe next year I'll have a single with room for a sewing machine... and maybe the ability to learn to sew using patterns!

Stuff that looks decent on bigger people- especially bigger teenagers- is so expensive and rare to find. The only store I know that specializes in bigger clothes for teenagers that I know of is Torrid, which generally even the smallest size is too big for me and it's not my style at all. Not to mention it's SO expensive. My wardrobe is pretty vanilla. :(
