I saw this mentioned elsewhere in an older thread, but I need some elaboration on it. If someone (me) is altering a pair of jeans that they have grown out of, and they need to adjust the waist in addition to the legs, is the proper way to go about this to cut all the way up through the existing waist band to add the panel? Or to remove it all together? (cuz I have tried that and failed)
If you are inserting more space to fit your waist, you have to cut through the waistband to accomodate the piece. this works if you make a waistband-like piece on your insert and not just 1 thickness of cloth sewn to the waistband. insert half of the space you need around your waist on each side, make sure your waistband is secure and you should be good! the only time that taking off the waistband works is when you are not inserting a panel. depends on how much space you need. my husband doesn't want to admit that he's getting fat around the waist, so he currently has a rubber band hooked through the waist button hole, about 2" of fat, and the rubber band around the button. the zipper won't go up, so he wears his shirttail out. and they say women are vain!
Ha! I feel like your husband. This swelling from the baby is getting annoying. Thank you for your tip! I've been trying since I was 15 to figure out how to work the waistband. I feel kinda stupid for not thinking of just cutting it.
