i read the first of the series, and although it has some very nice erotic imagery/scenes/plotline, i just couldn't get out of my head that she was writing from her own personal fantasy desires - kinda turned me off from that perspective, for i couldn't seperate the author from the tale

i do prefer the vampire series - it's more erotic in a mental way ;)

I just finished the first book. I will probably not read the others. It has some nice eroticism at times but mostly it's just ridiculousness. I guess I like more realism in my fantasies. I was told it was a good BDSM book but you see that requires consent from all parties which was NOT in this book.

I was quite shocked the girl was only 15! That's really off putting. I'm not into pedaphilia at all.

I did not buy that a 17 year old boy would be that self possessed. I thought he was disgusting and unbelievable as a character. He clearly was into necrophilia and pedophilia.

I kept think if I was kept naked constantly what all would end up in my holes. Not good thing but rather long hairs and such. Ucky!

You can't be doubled for that long at all. That will send you to the hospital.

You can't stay shakled constantly or have nipple rings on for hours. This will damage you.

You can't have sex with just anybody and everybody or have wooden things stuck up your ass with no cleaning and no lube without serious health problems.

I don't understand enjoying seeing people crying while eating. I don't understand why so much damn work was done to keep attacking people and how EVERYONE seemed to enjoy it. Isn't there a kingdom to run? I mean, really, that's pretty boring if that's all you do.

In short, the book didn't thrill me as much as I had hoped and I'm very glad to be done with it.

I agree with you that stories were rather unrealistic. And how come none of those girls got pregnant?

All that said, there are some scenes that I really liked like that scene in the Inn in Beauty's Punishment where Beauty first experiences being gangbanged by a group of soldiers.

Now that you mentioned it, have you noticed that Anne Rice keeps bringing in these really young characters who engage in sexual acts in a lot of her books?

There's Mona Mayfair who started having sex at the age of 12 with several male members of the Mayfair clan and ends up pregnant at age 13. There's 16-year-old Belinda who seduces 44-year-old Jeremy Walker. THen there's Beauty who is 15. Even in the Vampire Chronicles: Armand was 17 when he was made into a vampire. Before that, he was already Marius' lover. Claudia was 6 when she was turned into a vampire; and although she never explicitly has sex with either Lestat or Louis, she does age mentally and eventually becomes a sort of lover for both of them.

Themes of incest and pedophilia are found in a lot of Rice's work.

I know. I think it has something to do with losing a child so young. I'm not sure what. The little girl character, Claudia, in Interview was based on her dead little girl. She said so.

What else it might resonate for her, I have no idea.

I do know that the first Mayfair Witch book wasn't a good one for me to read while pregnant. I mean she gave up her child to a damn demon? WTF?? I was furious at that and her betrayal of her husband.

I did like the rest of the Mayfair Witch books better though.

And another thing: ever notice that all her characters are hardly what we would call ordinary people? They're either rich, or used to be rich, royalty, etc. And they all seem to have an appreciation for the finer things in life like art, classical music and all that. THink about it. Lestat was the son of an aristocrat, the Mayfairs were a huge family with money like the Vatican, Beauty was a princess, Belinda was the daughter of a famous actress and even appeared in a few movies herself...and the last Anne Rice novel I read was about Jesus (okay, not rich but he was the SOn of GOd and King of the Jews).

I thought the trilogy made good bedtime-story reading for the S.O. and I, but I think in general, Rice's stuff is meant to be escapist fantasy and nothing more. I find if I leave it at that, I tend to not get so annoyed with the extreme improbability of the whole mess. Mostly though....I'm just amused at the constant stream of twisted shit that she comes up with. :)

I enjoyed these well enough, although there's a little too much spanking for me. Not into that, thanks!

And I agree that it's escapism - why would you want to read a fantasy smut book where the girl gets gonnorhea or pregnant???? LOL!

    *hugs*

I love spanking but not in public, not during meals, not 24/7.

I love realism in my fantasy. I hate all the HUGE boobs and cocks BS.
