I hate people that think they're better than everyone else or more knowledgeable (sp?) when it comes to music. I'm not talking about people who dis on britney or any other MTV garbage, I'm talking about people who like a band/song until it gets popular, and then try to play it off like they're too cool to listen to that shit. For instance, alot of the more trendy "deadheads" claim to hate "touch of gray" for no reason other than the fact that it was popular. With phish, I notice alot of those same trendy dreaded assholes claim to hate "bouncing around the room" because too many college kids like it, it's too trendy, blah blah blah. On another board, i read some girls talking shit about the DMB song "satellite" (which I happen to love) because "too many little teeny boppers listen to it." So, i want to know, if someone else besides a few people listen to a particular song, does that suddenly make it bad? I mean, I understand that you can sometimes get tired of a song when it gets played over and over again, but for the most part, these three songs don't get alot of radio time. I think it's just popular within the scene(s) to pretend to be better than other people by claiming you don't like the same shit everyone else does. Like you're too good to be caught dead listening to the same songs the rest of us lowly human scum enjoy. The number of people who listen to it do not bring down the quality of the song, ya know? I like what I like, whether I'm the only one that knows about it or if 10 million other people listen to it. I just think the whole thing is silly. Anyway, sorry to rant, and I'm sure they're are gonna be a few people here (probably the type of people I just described) that are gonna bash me for saying all that. Hopefully there are a few people here that agree with me though.
yeah, I'm probably trendy for talking down on the trendy's who try to be anti-trendy Is that a problem?
I agree to an extent. But let's consider what makes music popular (or "trendy"). Music that is popular is often so because of its accessibility. The more digestable music is, the more people like it. The fact that many people like it is not always as bad as WHY so many people like it. Most people don't like music that is challenging, rather something that sounds good the first time they listen to it, but gets old after repeat listens. Another thing about such songs is that they're overplayed. I am sure 'Touch of Gray' is the only Grateful Dead song that a lot of non-Deadhead people have heard, and it's one of the few Grateful Dead songs that many so-called "classic rock" stations play. I am not a fan of the Grateful Dead by any means, but I can see how many Deadheads would frown upon a song like 'Touch of Gray,' because it's not really the type of song the Dead are noted for by their hardcore fans, which are their more expansive, meandering, jam-based tracks. The Grateful Dead kind of sold out with that entire album. Frankly, I think it's stupid to dislike anything because of what other people think about it. I don't know about other people, but there is a reason why I don't like a lot of the more commercialized music that's out there. Simply put, much of it is vapid, unchallenging, and completely devoid of feeling and emotion.
i agree, too many people i know are like this. one friend i have used to kind of like yellowcard, but now that they're all over mtv, she claims that they suck and yadda yadda. i know for a fact that her music taste has grown a lot since then, but still, why can't you just admit you once liked bad music? theres no shame in it once you've grown out of it.
well..i happen to agree w/ u moonshyne.... i don't care how trendy something may get.. i'm all about the music if i feel it..then for no reason at all will i do something like that... that's just stupid.. i'm just myself.. i don't conform to the normal 'hippy' standards i guess u could say...
The thing is though, i'm not talking about commercialized music or anything, I agree with you whole-heartedly there. I'm talking about people who enjoy a song, any song, but if it starts to become popular they start to pretend like they hate it simply because more than a handful of other people know about it. I used to see this shit happen alot with punk bands. As long as the music stays pretty much underground and unknown, it's okay to like it but as soon as they begin to pick up some air play, those same folks will accuse them of either "selling out" (even when it's the same songs and the band hasn't yet had time to sell out on a second album) or pretend they never liked them to begin with. Also, the album touch of gray was on might have sucked, but that song is AWESOME live. I don't like much of their studio work, and none of it sounds the same when it's played live, anyway.
If you did conform, you wouldn't be a real hippy anyway....except maybe in appearance. It's all a state of mind, rather than appearance and musical taste! Hooray for the non-conforming hippies out there!
y'know, i honestly have no idea what yur talkin about. maybe i skimmed. shoulda read properly??? i dont think there are many people who do what ur describing unless they're reeeeally losery in which case u need not waste time speaking of them.
I think it's bullshit when people don't like something just because it is trendy, or only like it because it is underground. This isn't restricted to just music, is life in general. Too many people base their lives around trying to fit into a particular niche in society. Long hair on guys became trendy again, should I cut my hair just because I feel the compulsive need to tree to stay on the outside of society. You can either conform to the mainstream or conform to the underground. I mean I don't particularily like where Santana goes with his music, you know trying to follow trends and stuff like that but...DAMN he can fucking play, and right now I can't think of a single guy who can connect to me with just a tone like Santana can. Good music is good music and that doesn't change regardless of who makes it. Modest Mouse has become popular recently, should anyone stop liking them? Instead of random noise-making, they're making their music more accessable...and that's supposed to be bad? Float On is a good song no matter who puts it out there. And that is definately true. Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, I think, are the ony studio albums to buy. The tunes didn't come together in the studio. You need the whole collective experiance.
I love touch of grey makes me smile!! Anyhow I know what your talking about. I met a guy the other day and the first thing he said to me was "I Hate Phish" now I was never a huge fan but i respect them. How could he have possibly known how i was gonna react to that???
oh god funky, My ex used to take extreme delight when we were together at any show in pointing out to everyone wearing a phish shirt how much I hated phish and how he was an "old school hippy". I like a few phish songs now, though I'm still not a big fan. This was back in 94, before Jerry died and people had not quite yet caught on to the phish scene. I was 15 at the time, and it was as if he enjoyed pointing out to people that HE was chill, he was "in", and I was just an outsider or something. I HATE THAT MAN!!! ha, he's exactly the type I'm talking about though. Once I left him, he started trying to hook up with some other chic who loved rod stewart, and he went and bought a bunch of his CD's, i guess thinking he was gonna impress her or something. He tried to pretend like he enjoyed it, but once she made it clear she didn't want, him he dropped that shit quick.
lord he pretended to like rod stewart, thats pathetic. i like a few phish songs, farmhouse is probly my fave just cuz i wanna live on a farm i caught my hubby listnin to phish a few months ago after we came home from bonnaroo, all this time i thought he didnt like em LOL!! some people wold crucify me if they heard this but i woldnt go see em unless they were at a festival i was already going to or someone gave me a free ticket, i woldnt pay to see em, never wold have......*i know a few people who always have to do "whats in"*whats odd to me, i have always like to drink jager, last festival it was everyone drink of choice......WEIRD!!!
People are trying to hard to be different that they look like idiots. It can be like that with many things not just music. Although music is really a factor in the whole selling out deal, people just don't want to like everybody else. Especially iwth the channel, MTV. People hate bands as soon as they hit the air. I think that if a band can get success even through that channel, how is that selling out. It's like you are being selfish because a band is making it and you don't want to share it with anybody else. I was once like that but then realize, I like what I like. If it becomes popular or everybody think it's the worst, oh well. I learned that it's what I like is what is important. I don't pay attention to those little things but to what I like. What I really hate is that people look back on their old music they used to like and blash people who like it now. It's like they regret that or have such a big deal about that music now and say they didn't know anybody. It's like deal with what you liked and all, who cares. You liked it but now you don't.. don't bash others. Aww, many wonders of this world.
hehe i used to listen to boys 2 men, vanilla ice, color me bad, and that band soul 4 real that did that song candy rain! i am proud of it!! i can't deny my past!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hell I even dressed up as a spice girl with my friends at school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know, farmhouse sounds alot like "no woman no cry" to me, which i love, but...what was my point again? I had one, i swear, but I think i lost it. I love Fee though, or any of the times they've done the jungle book song "i wanna be like you" or whatever it's called. I never did like trey though, even before it became popular to dislike trey. I used to like PM DAWN...heehee, sometimes I still do. Can't say I ever dressed like a spice girl, though. I used to be a total grunge princess. I still like Type O Negative's version of Neil Young's song, "Cinnamon Girl."
Moonshyne it saddens me to say..i think alot of hippies (especially on this site) do conform to the "normal hippy standards' like they should listen to the dead, and have dreads (nothing against sprout cuz his r so fabulous thx to u ) or wear nag champa or whatever....u know....i think some people do it cuz they think it's KEWL...i do things cuz it's what i like...Hippies kinda piss me off actually..AND I DO NOT CALL MYSAELF A HIPPY...if that's what someone wants to label me...FINE....Hipies r supposed to be full of luv, but really lots of them r full of hate....and they r supposed to be about non conformaty but really...lost of them conform ...and most hippies r liberal(which is fine) but thye say they hate the media...well liberal means what is POPULAR...LOL it's so funny..cuz the media is liberal...so they just eat up what is told to them and belive it...haha...its ridiculous...I HOPE ALOT OF PEOPLE DO THE POPULAR THING AND TALK SHIT TO ME FOR POSTING THIS...ok...i guess i'll shut up now.....thx for giving me a place to finally say somethings i've always wanted to say! !
Rar1013....I very much agree.....with this whole thread actually. Every person is truley unique and yet I think sometimes that uniqueness is sacrificed because the person wants to be associated with a certain scene or label that looks good to him/her. Apparently now its uncool to go to a dave matthews show because "it's all a bunch of college preps ruining the scene". Umm...What? I have heard that quite a bit. I never can understand....I have loved Dave since the very early 90's and I still do, and see him every chance I get. Whoever else is at the show doesnt really concern me...Im not there to see them. That goes for everyone I see live. We are all so fucking complex, I dont think one name, label, whatever can describe anyone...people should embrace that. Many dont....it's more of a monkey see, monkey do sorta thing. One of the biggest freedoms is to be devoid of that complex. I dunno, where am I going with this? I'll shut it now cause I have no fucking clue, just very overtired and ranting I guess. And funkyphresh.....I had all those albums too when I was like 10 and 11....I even had the kriskross album....."kriskross will make ya Jump Jump"....oh, and arrested development who I still love.
hehe i never had the kriss kross album but i still know all the words to "missed the bus"... and as for Dave... I still dig the older stuff but I havent listend to him much in the last few years so I really don't know whats goin on with him now :sunglasse , one band that i have always loved that my hubby gives me constant shit for THE SPIN DOCTORS, the other day i heard on vh1 someone call the "the gateway drug to all jam bands" hahahaha
