From what I've seen I didn't detect ANY racism whatsoever.

i don't think it was racist either ... maybe there were some slightly off-colour comments and there was definitely bullying but i dont' think it was intended in anyway as racism ... no more than me doing an impression of Apu from the Simpsons and asking "would you like to buy a squishie?"

It was all a little distasteful. Maybe not rascist. Most deffininitly ignorant.
Say something in haste regret at your leisure.

Those three will be regreting being arrogant bitches for a very very long time.

Shilpa was arrogant and condescending in her own right but did not deserve the treatment she got.

Shilpa Shetty said her tormentors were petty and juvenile

Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty said the alleged racist bullying in the house was not a battle of race, but between "right and wrong".

She told the Daily Mirror she had no idea the bullying was so bad until she watched the complete footage of her ordeal.

And she said bullies Jade Goody and Jo O'Meara must seek "professional help" to overcome their problems.

She told the newspaper: "I'd no idea it was so bad. They are so mean. Why didn't someone stop them? It hurts me deeply. Look at me ... I am shaking.

"This is so petty, so juvenile, so nasty. There is hatred there and that hurts deeply. Only now, this is sinking in. I am someone who has never been judgmental, but Jade's behaviour is obnoxious, very aggressive, nasty and suffocating."

She asked: "Why are they laughing? Why did no one step in to help? What had I done that was so wrong? Can you believe this is the epitome of womanhood? I can't believe women will act like that. It's totally alien to me."

Talking about the divides between the housemates, Shilpa added: "It was not a battle between brown and white. It was a battle between right and wrong. And right won.

"Jade and Jo need professional help, not condemnation. I am someone who believes in karma ... what you have sowed will be repaid.

"Danielle I'm still ok with. What she did was horrible and upsetting, but she's very young and stupid.

"It was so apparent who started the rift ... Jade. I don't think she did it consciously but it was to make sure she didn't get nominated by the girls."

i dont know that jade is intelligent enough to be racist intentionally...i mean 'racial' - she didnt even know the word.

it was blatent bullying and nasty, but i dont think it was racist either. shilpa herself has said that it wasnt racist but the press know it'll sell their papers to carry on with the 'alledged' story lines

Indeed, there was no racism whatsoever. It was simply girl rivalry. I think Shilpa cried racism just to get more notariaty.

I guess some people will go to extreme lengths to get in the limelight.

She did think about it for a while. I think she did not realise what was actually going on till she left. Then she had time to reflect. She WAS bullied and i do not think she 'cried wolf' about that. She got on with Danniele once she was out.

I think Shilpa was the one saying it wasn't racism...

It wasn't deliberately or knowingly racist but from what I saw it quite clearly showed an underlying unconscious racial prejudice - picking on things like her name and refusing to say it properly, the kind of food she liked, the way she behaved - these are all ways of excluding and demonising someone because of cultural differences, which is basically what racism is.

This opinion piece put the case quite well - racism isn't just calling someone a ******, but an ingrained set of assumptions and a fear of / refusal to engage with difference:

I saw the footage which was quite awful but I dected no racism. All I detected was an air of ignorance. Ignorance was bliss in the Big Brother House.

I think that after this fiasco that once again got blown out of preportion to the point of having effigys and jade dummys dangling from stakes in a fire, i think the Reality tv era has or should come to a close. George Orwell was right about Big Brother. I find that watching someone sleeping is the most boring thing to watch. Perhaps it is time reality tv got an axe.

    Congrats to Shilpa.

When Jade said shilpa should go ''back to the slums'' maybe she should. She did have a air of superioty to her. She did need to see what the ''other side'' was like. Her humility was not apparent.
All that was a bit bullshit.
What was right about what he said ?.
Meh She will go back to making pointless glossy Bollywood horseshit. Best place for her.

Ignorance and a degree of classism rather than overt racism I'd say. But racism, in many, though not all cases, is an extention of ignorance, and the seeds are there amongst people like Jade....

Can you think of any examples where racism exists separately from ignorance? Even if the person is in other regards clever, racism is an ignorant viewpoint... racism is a kind of ignorance, isn't it?

I would say examples where racism does not breed primarily from ignorance would be the manipulative form of nationalism that populist leaders have employed a number of times throughout history to legitimate their own power and to focus the attentions of society on an internal or external other. Ultimately this, of course, plays to the ignorance of the population, but those pulling the strings are playing a much more clever game....
