    Dear all,

    I am a Belgian translator and am currently making a test translation for a publishing house. The story is set in Sidney, and it contains a series of slang words that I don't understand.

    I'd be terribly appreciative if any of you would be willing to help me out.

    Here they come:

    1. (She would vent on being pissed off by) slopeheads and 2. dirty boongs
    3. (I'm equally racist about anybody, but) slimy Lebs (Lebanese?) i really hate
    4. the beautiful Lebo boys in their long boardies
    5. the clubbies in their budgie smugglers
    6. the girls with their muffin tops poking out proud as can be
    7. old women with bodies like weary pavs

    Thanks a lot for any help!

    American soldiers in the Vietnam war sometimes called Asian people "slopes" or "slopeheads". I believe there were a few Aussies in the war as well, and maybe this is the origin of the word (maybe the Americans got it from the Aussies?)

    I don't believe your story as I'd be very surprised if slurs of this nature were published but here are the translations you seek:

    1. Slopeheads = Asians. Boongs = Aborigines.
    3. Lebs = Lebanese (usually refers to male Lebanese)
    4. Lebo = Lebanese male; boardies = boardshorts
    5.Clubbies = nightclub patrons; budgiesmugglers = men who wear pants that make the shape of their balls obvious for all to see;
    6. muffin top = the skin that sticks out between tight jeans and a tight top;
    7. pav = pavlova; in this context refers to mutton dressed as lamb;

    Now bugger off.
