At my first Gathering in 1980 in West Virginia a guy murdered two sisters 2 days before the Gathering.
They were hitching to the Gathering and rumor control said it was done to stop the Gathering as the girls bodies were dumped in front of the focalizers house.
Please do not hitchhike! Taking your Mom is a great idea.
Don't let your Mom hitchhike!
I've never found out if they ever caught the demon that would do that to two beautiful young sisters.
Have your own reliable transportation.

 

Chriskarma- that's a horrible story If it is just me and my cousin (and hopefully a few friends) we'll definitely drive ourselves there, she has a car. Same goes if we end up going with our moms. I wouldn't feel very safe hitchhiking, especially at my age.

 

Hitchiking is not nearly as dangerous as people say, and those that say usually have never done it.
That said, I would never encourage a 17yo girl to do it solo.

People get killed all the time. Car wrecks, muggings, murders, just up the street from their homes even.

With all due respect to the girls, one double homicide, 27 years ago, when considered that there are probably around 7-10,000 people hitchiking regularly in the USA is not statistically significant.

You're welcome to continue living in your cocoon however.

I'm not picking on you eoso, I am firmly trying to establish that hitching is very dangerous, I have done plenty of hitching and have gotten to plenty of gatherings that
way & I have had to contend with at least one well documented murderer and tons of really weird dudes obsessed with having sex and quite a few thieves.
& it's not only the 2 girls that were killed in 1980, I remember that because it was my first gathering. I am speaking from 27 years of experience of traveling all over, my life has not been a cocoon in any sense of the word, not by a long shot.

There are at least a few hundred missing young women every year, in the very least.
probably just as many go unreported and no one ever knows.
Why make yourself an easy target?

Bad things do happen, however I still contend that hitching is not all that dangerous if you have any modicum of common sense and instinct. It's not for everyone but I'm not saying it is.

The country is much safer in fact than it used to be, violent crime has dropped an incredible amount in just the past 15 years* but for some reason people are living their lives in enormous fear, much moreso than the past. Irrational fear is something to be afraid of much more than any errant sociopath.
