I still can't get over this. You would think the amount of definitions in dictionaries and encyclopedias would make someone understand the true meaning of vegetarianism - NO ANIMALS! Anyway, I did a little research on this and on the vegan forum I visit I found a thread which might explain why these silly, silly people are saying these offensive things... Here's the thread... I can only imagine that it is this sort of garbage that is passed on from person to person, and that which causes them to believe untruths. It took me a very long time to get to where I am now, a hell of a lot of research and mistakes. Like I said in my post in that thread - my lifestyle is being ripped apart - by someone who wants a label to be different or fashionable or whatever fucked up reason is in their head. If I can find an address I will contact this 'doctor' and inform him of all this and try to stop it. I am all for holistic medicine, hell I use it myself! But I cannot condone the illusion any longer.
In Dr. Weil's defense I have never seen him say that vegetarians eat fish and poultry. I have read one of his books and get his daily tips in email. In his book he clearly states that he use to be vegetarian but now he eats fish as his only meat. I have seen him advise others to give up all meat except fish, though he certainly does not push it and actually seems to prefer a vegetarian diet as in all his advice on fish he gives alternatives for those of us who don't eat any meat. I have not read all of his work or seen him in person but from what I have read he seems to know what a vegetarian is. Maybe people are misunderstanding him when he talks about these two diets so close together. If you want to check him out or contact him here is his website: http://www.drweil.com/drw/ecs/index.html Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Weil is careful about the fish he recommends too. No species that are being over fished or endangered...and none that have any mercury or PCB's, and only fatty fish with omega 3 fatty acids... which only leaves a very select group of fish....wild alaskan salmon is one, but a lot of it is falsely advertised as being wild, so you have to be careful with even that. I forget the other kind that are safe to eat.
They're just using the wrong word.. I believe those people are called frugatarians or something. I'm serious about that hah. It means they only eat meat occasionally but not very often, and usually chicken or fish. I definitely see where you stand - they're not vegetarians if they don't cut it out, they're more like temporary vegetarians or something. Ohhh well sometimes people are just kinda dumb. =P
i believe they are called "weekend vegetarians" lol i was a weekend vegetarian when i was in middle school, because my parents actually forbid me to cut out meat completely. now im lacto-ovo, but my mom is still on my back lol
That seem to happen alot, I met someone last summer who went on about it then I got the but I eat egg"s, fish and sometimes chicken, I didnt have the energy to tell them so. I don"t know how much I trust DR. Andrew Wiel"s Logic , hope that doesn"t get me in trouble, but it seem"s he recomend"S alot of rubbish, sorry to wheel bash. peace
I think that if you state you are a vegetarian, but then have to add that you eat other things it should be a good indication that you are not what is usually considered one. I mean most people eat meat, fruit, vegetables, nuts, etc and there are many cultures that only eat fish and chicken as their meat and only a few times a month. Does that mean they would be considered vegetarian?
I don't get all that label stuff. Yes I am veggie, and no, I don't eat fish or chicken. But for me, "vegetarian" is a description of the food I'd like to eat. Not for me.
I don't know WTF is up with that either. If being generous I would refer to them as flexitarians, but seriously you're either and omni or you're not. Or pescatarian, that's a neat word and accurate, so yeah why not. It's very selfish and unfair on the flexitarians part, because they make things so much more difficult for those who truly are vegetarian. I still get asked if I eat fish, have even been give fish on occasion (sent it back of course). They get so defensive about it too, which I'd take as a pretty good indication they know they're in the wrong (otherwise you'd have nothing that'd need defending), but hell life's too short to argue with utterly ignorant people. Shall just correct them and move on.
I don't think you all should be so angry at them. Instead of hating them for the fact that occasionally they eat fish or chicken, why not appreciate their not eating meat 95% of the time. I'm sure the 95% of the animals not being killed are grateful. Some people can handle going 100% vegetarian and sticking to it, but you have no idea how many "former vegetarians" I've met who were very strict while on the diet and now don't do it at all. It's better to do 95% for life then 100% for six months.
thats cool and in fact a desirable thing, those that eat very little animal flesh as part of their diets are to be encouraged. So long as those who are happy to eat meat of whatever origin at certain times, are happy that we keep the really quite clear and rather simple definitions in order to keep it clear for the larger community just what people do or don't eat.
I think there is a sort of line from uncaring meat eater to slighty concerned meateater to seldom meat eater to vegetarian to vegan to vegan or veggie that wouldnt eat meat even if it meant starving to death . If your a vegetarian how would you feel about eating meat if you are literally starving would you eat dead human, would you eat fish or a tin of spam or would you rather die . Now this is slightly different from someone that eats fish and poultry as part of a low meat diet, but if you would eat fish rather than starving you are still making a choice to eat fish so are you a vegetarian
Well probably, to us, but it probably doesn't make much diffrence to animals. I mean would you rather be shot, beaten to death, or not harmed at all? I have no idea; because it's never happened and probably never will. Random hypothetical scenarios are irrelevant, what matters is that every one of us every day has to make choices about whether we eat a non-human or not. Indeed I choose not the latter, because I have no call for the former. Yes I refuse to give a straight answer, because there isn't one; and the question is usually some ploy for omnis to appease their own issues, which I have no time for.
I know some idiot who pretends to be vegetarian to get in with this anarchist vegetarian girl who I'm friends with. I told him that was fucked up, cause I'm vegetarian, and seeing meat eaters pretend to be vegetarian pisses me off
I just found this on another site... :banghead: What hope is there? How can people be educated about the correct definition when this crap is being published?
had a girl at work tell me today that she was vegetarian but she ate fish, quickly pointed out she was pescetarian...then had to laugh to myself on the way home cause we are teaching English!!:whatever:
My mom and I were discussing this the other day.I am a vegetarian, and she wanted to become on as well. But then she said she didn't want to give up fish because it was so good for you, and I clearly stated that she wouldn't be a vegetarian than. She agreed. Dr Weil, does not claim to be a vegetarian. I am a big reader of his books, so I know. And no. as long as you are taking in animal protein, you arenot a vegetarian. PERIOD
