He's right you should steal it! but if you have to buy it, well it's a pretty good book about how to live on freebies. Too bad Abbie isn't around to update it. Bustramp
http://www.eriswerks.org/steal.html don't buy the damn thing. that would contradict the entire book "Our moral dictionary says no heisting from each other. To steal from a brother or sister is evil. To not steal from the institutions that are the pillars of the Pig Empire is equally immoral."
i had a copy but someone stole it. it's a good historical oddity but has lost alot of revelance for todays world. hardly any of the scams work anymore, except mabey the free food scams. also the shoplifting section is the basis of most store theft prevention training.
I'm surprised they're allowed to sell it in the current climate, as it contains detailed instructions for making pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails and other improvised weapons. Maybe no-one's noticed. I got my copy at Borders a couple of years ago BTW.
If you think about it though everything described in the book can be found out at your local liberary anyway.
It's terribly out of date...most of the addresses and stuff do not exist as they once did..as well as a lot of the "How To's" on how to steal or how to get across country for free hardly apply anymore because of the increase of technology since he wrote it in the 70's...
o-kay, I'm off to my library tomorrow to ask them how to make pipe bombs. I'll let you know what they say (if I don't get arrested).
You can get the book along with "reveloution for the hell of it" and "woodstock nation" in "the best of abby hoffman" from random house. It's worth picking up just for the first two rarities. You can't find revolution or woodstock nation anywhere anymore.
anyone seen "steal this movie", a Hoffman biopic that came out in 2000? It's not that bad really, except the actor's way too tall. You might find it in a DVD bargain bin.
yeah i read the whole book online. lol. i told my mom about it and she was all 'abbie hoffman - what a jackass' oh man. i didn't want to ask. my mom was a total hippy back in the day (still is at heart). i told her of everything i had read at age 14. she broke my heart when she told me how it those things would never work anymore. lol
Actualy they didn't work all to often when the book was first published according to later writings from abbie. He said that he recieved hundreds of letters that started "Dear Abbie, tried your scams, got busted. Please send bail money..."
Don't read it for specifics, as the exact instructions he gives are no longer applicable. Read it to gain the mindset and philosophy he had, which will allow you to figure out ways to do all the things he tells you how to do in the book. Also, don't buy it
