So I have beared the Hippy brand for a little while now.... but I just recently dyed my hair, for no reason but a fun experiment, and I am planning on getting tattoo on my lower back. I have my ears pierced in multiple places.... but I never saw any of that as being a bad thing... I just had an idea, liked it and thought it was unique and did it. I saw it is indivuality. Not quite for show, but just because if it's something I like then why not??? I never saw it as body mutilation but just as kind of painting a new picture of how i feel and who i am every day.... yet the other day I ahd somebody confront me as being hypocritical because I allow others to view me as a "hippy" yet I do all of these body modifications to myself, and if I were a true hippy then I would only believe in natural things.... such as never ever wearing make up, not dying your hair,no piercings.... I would believe as the whole beauty comes within kinda deal. I DO. Honestly, I can look at somebody and say "Wow, they are attractive." But not as "Wow, I reall admire that person, they are a beautiful person." It's NOT the same thing, and I don't do what I do for looks but for the sake of creativity if that makes any sence.... For a while I cared about what it looked like, but after looking like crap a countless amount of time, I believe I ahve jsut bcome de-sensitized to it... But maybe I am wrong. Maybe I am being hypocritcal and body motifications aren't the hppy way. What do you think?
The "Hippie Way" as you call it is whatever YOU define it as. Although, in reality, none of us are hippies in here....most of us didn't live in the 60's, or attend woodstock. Living how you want to live, in my opinion, is the "hippie way"...I don't think there are any rules. Of course, I'm not a hippie, so what do I know?
i agree with the above. i used to try hard to be a sterotypical hippie..but i just got too confused afer a while, gettin confusewd on who i was. i deicded jus to do what i liked, no matter what. because inside i know who i am. i mean who wants to fit into a sterotype anyways??? do what u like, and t hat makes u who u are.
I third what Annie & Dejavoo said. Most of us are hippies at heart, but maybe not appearance wise. Plus if you try to imitate a stereotypical look, that won't be you being yourself, rather you being someone else. Don't judge others and never let others judge you, especially based on appearances.
no matter what you do you will always be put into a stereotype. Its just the capitalist way! Sometimes i try to avoid any possible stereotypes. It helps you find who you really are.
No one of us are sterotypical hippies. But most of us have a little hippie inside of us. It's who you are that makes sence, not the way you look. I like to dress a bit odd and wear what many people would call hippie clothes and jewelry. But that's just because I like it. As someone else said, instead of making a painting - I make myself
Personally, I try not to label myself or anyone with anything. But the fact remains that wherever I go, and whomever I'm with, people almost immediately begin referring to myself and my partner as "the hippies". It's not something I've ever instigated, or even encouraged. But it is something that I've learned to deal with and don't argue about anymore. One thing though - It drives me crazy when people say that "hippies lived in the sixties" "you're not a real hippie unless you were at Woodstock". Bullshit. If anything, the "Hippie" mentality is just about love and peace and acceptance, respect for one another and the planet we all live on. Not when you were born or what shows you've been to. No generation should own a state of mind. And no real "hippie" would kick you out of their little club for being a generation behind them - if fact, they would welcome and accept you, and commend you for finding a peaceful, happy, fulfilling way of life.
i agree with Hummblebee...the only hippys were in the 60s,,wow that thought came from society. hippys were arround before the 60 s and are still here. I dont do the lable thing either, lots of folks call my wife and i hippys or those hippy artists.i got friend that calls us hippy bush,he will say it loudly even in a public place for all to here. allot of people say it in a demining way.pisses me off,i dont lable them. dosnt matter how you look, what music you like or how you talk, hippy comes from the inside evryone with a belly button can be a hippy. dosnt matter if ya got ink or holes in your skin.hippys with mods is happening more and more these days its self exspreshon.saying that hippys dont get pierced or inked ,is like saying hippys dont listen to electronic music.tattoos arnt just for sailers and whores annymore.boddy mods are popular with evry group of people. shit man dont ya think if jim morison or hendrix or for shure janis joplin was alive today they would have ink.(acually i think janis joplin had a tattoo of a flower) all in all HIPPY is a state of mind, not how ya look to the rest of the world. thanks for hereing me. peace, love, and green healing thoughts,,ITS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE woodenfrog
I agree with the last two posts. I have a friend who says that there are no more hippies left and it just pisses me off. I'm like, "Well what am I then?" And he says "You're just a hippie poser who likes to grow his hair and talk about peace and love and wear tye-dye. All of it is bullshit anyways" So I have alot of people judging me because my hair is long and I wear odd clothing like fringed jackets and multi-colored vests and I listen to 60's and 70's music. So, it's hard to be a "hippie" in my town, but I think I am in a sense. I just don't like the term. I'd rather be called a flower child or "one of Mother Nature's children". I know some people say i'm not a hippy because I can be negative and judgemental to people alot, but I don't care what they say. Hippiness comes from the mind. If I think that i'm a hippy, I am and I don't care what anybody else says.
I really just wish everyone would just be themselves...sometimes I think people try way too hard to be a certain way...when they aren't being true to themselves.
Yeah, I agree. Just put all these labels away and be who you are. If you like to call yourself a hippie, do so Personally, I like to be seen as a hippie because that makes me feel like I've shown someone my point of views. Even if I don't see myself as a real hippie, and yet sometimes wish I did, it's the easiest way to show who you are without open up yourself... okey... that was a bit muddled... nevermind.. Don't worry, be happy
As people have already says, who cares if you're a "hippie" or not. It's just a label. I used to wonder if I'm a hippie. I don't wear odd clothes (although I don't take much pride in my clothing, which I suppose is somewhat of a hippie ideal), I have short hair, and I haven't been to many great shows. However, I'm really into music, especially 60's stuff like the Beatles, psychedelics, Eastern religion, love, fairly liberal politics, free thinking kind of stuff... so, it all depends on how you look at it. To my conservative community I'm certainly eccentric if nothing else, but I'm being who I want to be, which is all that really matters. If you want to get a tatoo, get one. If you think you might regret it, don't, or think about it a little while longer. Just do what you want It's tough for most people to be who they really are, but it's so much easier when you let it happen.
Yeah... I understand.. I do really like and believe in the whole mindset of "hippy" is a philosophy and a way of life and believing in that is what being a hippy, modern or not, is all about. I know I believe the hippy way... and I am proud of who I am and stand strong in what I believe, but because I preach against labels, I really try not to call myself a hippy because I know people would look at me like a hypocrite. But the way I kinda see it is, calling myself a hippy is the same as calling myself a christian, a jew, a democrate.... just a set of beliefs you take... but people wouldn't see it that way.. and I really really shouldn't care, I know this, But I do. I don't want to be seen as a hypocrite... and I'm just going on a gut feeling right now you guys probably have the same problem lol
