Me and a friend have seen his dad's stash. First off, he keeps it in one of those little screw-lid cans for lead pellet-gun pellets, which doesn't seem entirely healthy, but that's not the weird thing. What's really strange is the deer-antler hitter that he uses, which I'm sure he made himself. The thing is fucking TINY. It seems to me like it would both smell and taste like burnt hair every time you hit it. Has anyone ever used a pipe or hitter made out of any kind of horn? I just don't want to think this guy is so much of a crazy outdoorsman that he braves the taste and odor just for the hell of it.
animal antlers definatly wouldnt be the best thing to make a pipe out of, this year my dad brought home a fairly large Deer rack, and my stupid dog grabbed it off our BBQ and managed to eat the whole fucking rack in one NIGHT!
i met a guy online that was a hunter and would make bowls out of antlers and bones. He even made some pretty decent money from selling them.
digi, I'm not seeing the correlation between your story and how antlers aren 't good to smoke. The way it reads, it seems that because your dog ate the rack, they aren't good. But maybe it's just a typo. I don't think there's anything wrong with using horn/bone for pipes. Didn't the Indians use bone and antlers for pipes? I'm sure some group of people have over the thousands of years.
err yea i guess i didnt really make the connection.. i just figure that if my stupid mut had been able to chew through an entire rack, i would think that heat and smoke would eventually break the bones down but who knows, could be good
Bone would be pretty different from horn when smoking, I think. It might also smell bad, but I'm pretty sure antler is basically the same stuff as our hair, nails, and their hooves, which seemed really gross.
