i'm sure this would be better suited in mental health..but I thought this was interesting. We're discussing the beginning concepts of abnormal psychology. What early 'psychologists' thoughts where on what made people abnormal. Hippocrates felt that it was an imbalance in the bodily fluids, that if you had a certain amount of one of the fluids that you took on that personality type. Hence the terminology "sanguine", "melencholy", "phlegmatic", and "Choleric". But anyways today we were discussing "lunacy" and how this one psychologist back in the 1700s felt that mental illness was caused by the moon. Since the moon affects the tidal waves and our body is made up of so much water I think it makes some sense. Anyways my professor said something about how this might sound crazy to people today. But does it really sound crazy? I mean if the seasonal changes affect people's mood, then why can't the moon? I brung this up in class and he didn't have a good explaination as to why it's not probable that the moon can affect our mood. I strongly feel that the moon & sun affect our moods and our mentality. What are your thoughts? Alas I am just a lowly psychology major who has too much time on her hands .
im not sure if this is bollocks or not but a friend of mine once told me his friends mum worked in a mental hospital and they always had extra staff in on a full moon because it affected the patients so i think theres alot of truth in it :/
Well he mentioned that alot of patients tend to check themselves into mental hospitals five days before and five days after the full moon..and that 33% of schizophrenics are born between december and march..i find this very interesting..but again I'm probably just strange xD
I'll try to come back here and share some more thoughts later. Serotonin (your brains most important neurotransmitter for controlling, mood, hunger, thought, rest paterns...) Can only be metabolized from some contact with the sun. Being out in the sun will make you happier.
the sun def affects my mood thena gain, I ahve sesaonal affective disorder (fuicky ou wine for making me spell worth crap) anwyho. the amount of sunlight affects how depressed I get. less sunlight = more depressed
The number of births per day goes up around the full moon. Hospitals are always busier with mothers giving birth then than at any other time of the month.
