my only source right now are my parents..money isnt so important to me.it really isnt altough i feel sometimes uncomfortable..maybe i'll get a job in the summer i have to much to study right now..
Thats a great idea ONLYONE !!!! I could always use a few more bucks ! I have been learning the art of "glass blowing" for a few years now. In my last class they demonstrated how to make a "niggerz", (a swahili term for bowl) and next time in class, I get to make one on my own. If I succeed I get to bring it home, and I am glad because I have plenty of fruit and nuts to put in it. Thanks for the suggestion.! Did you want to buy one for just $5. ????
Cool Is it true that it's not too difficult to teach English in the Chzech Republic because they don't seem to have to learn it perfectly? Seriously, I heard that.
I think your passion should be your occupation... That your avocation should be your vocation ... And that you should, "Follow your bliss" ... And that being a student (though not necessarily in school), should be a part of who you are. After all, like the line from the song goes, "Life is for learning". Me? I own and operate my own small, totally organic, self sufficent farm. It gives me the ability, among other things, to help feed the hungry, homeless, and victims of spouse abuse & their families. Peace, poor_old_dad
I was a self employed ARTIST sculpting fantasy creatures out of clay for 20 years. My passion WAS my livlihood and I think Everyone should have the guts to do what they LOVE for a living(and I was doing it BEFORE that book was written too!!!!!!). There was no way I thought I'd be able to do my art as my job in this world but I MADE it work...I tried and tried and tried and changed locations until I found a market for what I did. For those artisans that don't get it.....there IS a MARKET for ANYTHING in this world. Ya just gotta find the nitch that will support you and keep working your art or craft or music until it's the best you can ever do! Anyway, I was broke but happy for about 6 years then it all took off for 4 years with a big metaphysical gallery with 4 nationwide locations so I could buy my own cabin in the woods with cash. With the help of UPS I did my art for another 10 years. I didn't get married until I was 49 years old.Since together we needed a bigger property I get monthly payments for my cabin now. Arthritis and other physical problems hurt my ability to sculpt but the Universe "provided" for me! I think it worked out perfect BECAUSE I was never afraid to "do my own thing".! Peace and Love and Love What Your Work Is!!!! Amen! gemdragon I made 2000 of these one-of-a-kind sculptures during my career!
This was probably one of my favorite posts on this thread...and probably what the thread-maker needed to hear most. I was listening to a lecture one time by David Wolfe and he was saying that you will never be good at anything you don't love. You will never succeed and excel doing something you don't like to do. You can't put a lot of energy or recieve any reasonable income or compensation doing something that drains your energy.
Wow. I just wanna say how much hope this thread has just given me. I'm a college freshman, confused about where my life will take me, and now that I've seen that all you people have found some way to be happy with your job and your life and your passions, even if they haven't turned out the way you had planned. Thank you.
Well, I don't know about that, but thanks. Actually the heros are the folks who have spent 4 or 5 years in college, then gotten extra training, just so they dedicate their lives to helping the hungry, the homeless, the mentally ill, the victims of crime, and the victims violence and other abuse. Let's face it, these folks could have spent that time & effort getting degrees in, I don't know, Business Administration or something. Then dedicated their lives to getting themselves a bunch of big, fat, paychecks. What I do is assist the folks who are helping other people. I've been told that the following has happened in group homes/shelters for battered women. A couple counselers & the residents are in a group therapy session & some can't or don't "open up" about what has happened to them. But the same counselers and residents in the kitchen making pesto or pasta sauce (from my donation) and conversations start and healing begins. Or that in shelters/kitchens for the homeless and/or hungry, they'll have food, but it's bland. Add some fresh herbs, tomatoes & peppers, and it becomes a much better situation. I'm not a counseler in a group home, I'm not running a shelter, I assist the folks who are helping other people. This summer I'm planning to goto Haiti http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2992227&postcount=1 Again, assisting folks who are helping others. But if you think any of this is heroic, my suggestion is: Be your own hero. Go to an "old folks home" and just sit around and talk to the people there (you'll find that everybody has had incredible experiences), deliver food to shut-ins, read the newspaper to the blind... there's lots of things. Ask at the local shelters/kitchens/food bank/churchs/ etc. You'll find many ways, directly or indirectly, to help others. I've posted this around here before, it's part of my basic creedo: Nobody knows everything, but everybody knows something. Nobody can do it all, but everybody can do something. At times everyone needs help from someone, and at other times everyone can help someone. To bring this back to the subject of this thread, "What do you do to make a living", can be about more than how you spend your time to get money. Oh, some folks have, can, are, or will, live at least part of their life without the need for money. But to be realistic, most of us, most of the time, need some sort of money income. I mean, I can take sacks full of basil to the power company... it's not the green, leafy, stuff they're interested in. But, "What do you do to make a living", can also be about how you live your life. So, To your own self be true, Follow your Bliss, building good Karma, that sort of stuff is an important part too. Feed your spirit, not (just) your bank account. But that's just this old hippie's opinion.... Now where did I put my corkscrew? Peace, poor_old_dad
