I have it on vinyl & I love Pink Floyd-both periods-& Syd's 2 albums after he left the Floyd (which I have on CD). As far as fave tracks: Piper: Astronomy Domine, Lucifer Sam, Matilda Mother, Flaming, The Knome & Bike Sgt Pepper's: Being 4 the Benifit of Mr. Kite & When I'm 64.
Well...you have to understand...I only heard Piper for the first time this past year, and I really think it's wonderful. But Pepper was my Christmas present in December '67 when I was only 10 years old. I've been loving that album for 39 years as of 2006, and there's no way that any album I've only discovered in the past year could carry the sentimental weight that Pepper will always have for me. So, no disrespect at all to a very great and important Pink Floyd album, but it will always be Pepper for me...although it's not my favorite Beatles album. That would be the "White Album"...I think...or maybe Rubber Soul...or perhaps Magical Mystery Tour...or maybe it's a four way tie, I don't know...
What the Beatles did with just 4 tracks, destroys what is on Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Piper, is a garage album. i love its rawness. but Pepper, is a musical and engineering masterpeice. they opened a whole new world with that album....there is no real comparisson....
ahem sir, PAtGoD is by no means a "garage" album, the effects and engineering is easily on par with Sgt. Pepper's. The Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, and 13th Floor Elevators (though all in different scenes) opened that new world, the Beatles introduced it to a mainstream audience.
I'm definitely a Pepper man... Didn't really ever get into the early, nursery rhyme type Barrett led Floyd...
I love The Piper at the gates so much!I've heard that album well over 1000 times!!It's pure psychedelic music! The Beatles are the most overrated band ever! Pepper is a bit disappointing,,, Syd is (was,,, ) a genius! he played music like no one could!
beatles i like pink floyd, but not crazy about em. i like their music when im stoned, but sober not that much (besides a few songs).
argh. I loathe it when people say they love the floyd when they are stoned, and not when they are sober. I got into the floyd, when I was sober as a bird..... and I still like their music, even more so than the beatles. I just dont get what peoples fascinations are with getting stoned and listening to the floyd.
Try to listen to Piper at the Gates of Dawn when you are stoned, and I'm sure you will understand! But ofcourse it's good when I'm sober too!
Agreed MC. Floyd is an amazing experience that you don't need drugs for. I also enjoy them more than the Beatles. I "feel" their music more than any other band.
I'd rather listen to Revolver, but between the two I'd say Pepper. Piper's great, and IMO Pepper is a bit overrated, but I still don't think Piper's quite the album that Pepper is. Plus "When I'm Sixty Four" always makes me smile.
Piper abosultlyly. love Pepper's though but piper is a trip out phreak out album and peppers is more laid back. Piper also captures the maddness and genius that was syd barrett
I still say the best masterpiece of music in 1967 isnt on this list! Nice one to whoever pointed out that Axis Bold as Love came out in 67, as well as Are You Experienced. I love both PF and the beatles deeply, but Jimi showed em up by putting out two super albums in one year. I think Sgt Pepper would get more votes here if they had gone with the original list of songs. The best beatles psychedelia for me is Revolver, Sgt Pepper came off a little campy in spots. I love it tho. Piper has its share of campy too, and its a toss up as to whether one prefers hearing about Syds bike and numerology - or Pauls piano songs about girls leaving home and being 64. Both Pepper and Piper explore some strange places, musically. The instrumental PF is always amazing, and the soundscapes of the beatles is an audio artwork. But for me, Jimi did those things and more, weaving them into more recognizable songs. Jimi had the best of the composition, lyrics, recording gear, and talent to back it up. Then he did what the beatles and Floyd werent able to do as well, he went out and played it live in public. So my "write in" vote is still for Jimi Hendrix '67!
Although Sgt. Pepper´s is a wonderfully arranged album, I still prefer Piper. Syd Barrett can get a lot more beauty from simplicity. The Piper at The Gates of Dawn: Astronomy Domine, Matilda Mother, Flaming, Scarecrow. Sgt Pepper´s: Lucy in the Sky w/ Diamonds, Within You Without You, When I´m 64, Lovely Rita.
As stated numerous times, both are great albums, but I like Piper better. I like all the songs on that album, whereas, when it comes to Pepper, there's a few songs I don't care for.
