Not all writing is poetry -
I wondered what you people think poetry is?
I dont mean examples of poetry but what constitutes poetry?
What makes a group of words a poem?

well what makes a song different from poetry
    when its written down
I would have thought someone who writes poetry would know
    is this a fair answer?

    Well, I do know. :D

I know that it's impossible for me, as a poet, to define poetry. That would ruin everything. :D So I say that poetry is life because I figure that covers just about everything. :D

Listen, real poetry doesn't say anything; it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through anyone that suits you. -Jim Morrison

A poem is a naked person... Some people say that I am a poet. -Bob Dylan

If my poetry aims to achieve anything, it's to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel. - Jim Morrison

Poetry is what gets lost in translation. - Robert Frost

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.
    -Robert Frost

poems are filled with symbols and lines of unsaid words. they are fragments of lives that are like mirrors that reflect the person who is reading them.

    What is poetry?

What differentiates it from song for example,

apart from the fact that song is sung.

Is poetry poetry because of it's form, like prose or verse?

Or is it in the meanings behind what is explicit?

Is poetry but the sum of what the reader gleans from it?

    Had I written this differently,

Would it be just a thread on a stale forum?
