Some scientists are suggesting extracting extra CO2 from the air and storing it underground. What do you guys think of this?
how typical of us; covering up problems by creating other problems. why don't we just take responsibility and prevent future warming by bringing our world society to a new level of energy efficiency rather than continuing down our path of disaster and extracting our problems from the air and stashing them somewhere else. sorry, i don't really know what the effects of underground co2 storage would be, although i don't suspect we could pull that off for very long. the earth is in equilibrium and injecting co2 into it cannot go without consequences. i guess we could extract it and throw it into outer space--yayy! i need to go research this.
Actually here's what they want to do. It wouldn't to very much harm because they want to put the CO2 in underground caverns where they extracted the oil and natural gas in the first place. So in a sense they are putting it back to where it originally came from. And since the caverns have natural seals. Scientists say that they could hold 99% of the CO2 placed in them for at least a thousand years.
yeah that sounds cool if it would work but I mean we really need to solve the problem itself not just try and throw temporary solutions at it. Where did you here about the idea?
i like it. i hope it happens. i like that idea a lot more than i like dumping our shit in space. it feels more responsible... still, there'd be a lot of work to do to un-fuck-over ourselves... i think we're going to be in for a VERY rude awakening VERY soon and won't be "phasing out" our bad habits, slowly, over a long time... i think the switch will take at the most... 10 years. probably more like 3-5. i really don't think we can go on doing what we're doing for very much longer.
You have to realize that even if we ceased all of our CO2 emissions now. We still have the CO2 that has already been put into the atmosphere during previous years. This solution is meant to reverse the damage we have already done. And as for where I heard of it. I remember reading an article in a magazine once and then I looked it up on google.com.
It's not going to make any significant difference in the next 10 years time, but they are developing Carbon Sequestration and Storage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_sequestration#Artificial_sequestration
we are living on a living planet ......this globe is a sentient being . humans are meaningless fleas on back of a big dog .....the planet is smart nuff to see warming coming ....all it has to do is a score of mt st helens type ash volcanoes....and it will be global freezing .
again, we are just going to fuck up the balance of the nature, and we are going to cause more and more problems, and not solve anything
there is no "solution" that will let us continue to get away with callus destructive thoughtlessness. we can certainly continue to have tecnologies of many sorts, but using combustion to generate the energy to power them, even the 'combustion' of atomic nuclei, we etheir put a stop to, or the resultant colapse of the web of life puts and end to us. period. it's that simple. as for extracting co2 from the air. that's what the green part of living plants DO. not only extract the co2 from the air, but 'exhale' the o2 that we, and all land based animals on our planet, breathe, back into the atmosphere. it's the rate at which we're dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and the oceans that is the problem. that and a lot of other stupid things we're doing, that we absolutely don't have to be. all or mostly because of measuring value in terms of monetary economics and putting trying to impress each other ahead of the kind of world we all have to live in. there simply is no magic bullet that will let us forever continue to get away with doing that. and i know there are many who have been brainwashed into calling that the bad news. but the good news is that things like wind, solar and hydro are totaly real, even if they won't enable us to be as carelessly profligate in our energy consumption as we have been. we won't have to go back to picking berries and living in caves, but we ARE going to have to give up the internal combustion powered automobile and the coal burning generating plant, and paving the world over to drive cars on it and chopping down all the forrests to build tickey tackey subdivisions that turn into instant slums in 25 years. there's no myrical cure that is going to let us get away with not doing THAT. and we're also going to have to curb the ongoing expansion of human population, preferably reversing it in some effective but relatively painless way like lowering all human fertility accross the board, without bias or exception. indeed only such a relatively painless method is going to or even can be, effective, for reason perhapse a bit too complex to go into here. so extracting co2 is a bit of closing the barn door after the horse is already out, and letting the horse out in the first place, i.e. dumping so much of it into the air and water, is what we can and must stop. no amount of extracting it is going to effectively counter the ammount of it we're adding and totaly don't need to. =^^= .../\...
