Well, my sitar I ordered came today. Nothing fancy at all, only cost 300 bucks but for starting sitar who needs anything fancy. The reason I'm posting this here is because I was wondering if anyone a good teacher I could get incontact with. I know there is a music forum but you guys are much more willing to respond to questions than they are, plus I like you guys more. Peace, love, and health, Al
i've had a sitar for a few years and have yet to find a teacher, but that's cause i move around too much. if you realy want to learn all you need to know to understand eastern music theory you need to be extreemly dedicated to it. not to stereotype, but go to your local gas station and ask the atendent if he plays or knows someone who does. i've met many sitarists by walking into a gas station with my peice and having the clerk say "you are a sitarist? i also play the sitar!". ask members of the indian or pakastani communities and you will find people to teach you. if you are not willing to dedicate allot of your time and effort to learning eastern theory (totaly different than the western concept of music) dont waste anyone elses time and just mess around on your own. you can make some cool music on that thing even if you dont "know what your doing". i have used my sitar as my sole form of income (playing on street corners) all year, avarage about $15 and hour, and dont "know" how to play at all. good luck. peace and good vibes jesse
and the best place i've found to get spare parts, strings, mizarbs, and whatnot is mideast-music.com. you wouldnt belive how hard it is to find strings at a music shop. i broke a few strings in WI and had to travel to MA to a little eclectic music shop in the mountains for new ones. always keep spare strings. someday you may need some and not have access to internet or a place to ship them to (i.e. living on the road). if you want pickups for it, go to buckinghammusic.com
