Before I begin, I apologise if this has come up before. I went through 10 pages of threads before deciding maybe it hadn't come up yet. I also realize that many of you probably have never heard of the Gay-Straight Alliance. Right, well, I'm not gay but there is a GSA club in my school and it's very very new. They just started it last year, and I joined then because of my beliefs. I may not be gay, but I do believe that homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals. We only have 40 members, but it's still a pretty good number considering my city's religion is dominantly Christian. Even though 80% of the members are straight (the poll for this number was taken anonymously) it's still a pretty good club in my opinion. The 'rival' High school also has a GSA, but I have no idea how many members there are. For those of you who don't know, GSA is simply a club (could be in school, or community, whatever works) that allows Gays and Straights (Bisexuals, too!)to join together in unison and without fear or being discriminated for their beliefs. The GSA I'm in is working towards tolerance in our school. It's a very long-term goal, but I think it's a reasonable one. We have shirts and everything, so we can start getting our fellow peers to accept us. It's working, too. Last year a lot of the members got crap and such, but this year we've been getting less and less negative comments and have more people joining us everyday. Alright, long rant over. I'm not very good at explaining so I tried my best to look for a good website that will explain more and help out. Try http://www.gsanetwork.org/about/ If that doesn't work, then just type in 'Gay Straight Alliance' into Google or Yahoo. Now on to what I've been wanting to know. Out of curiosity (and I figure I can go over this with my own GSA club when we next meet), how many of you have a GSA in your schools? In your city? If you do have one, have you joined? If so, how do you feel about it progress-wise (have you made goals, ect etc)? If you haven't joined, why not? For those of you who don't have one, how do you feel about this? Have you ever thought of creating a club similar to GSA? How do you think your city/school would react if there was a GSA around? Oh, and if there are any other clubs like GSA or anything than please feel free to mention it. You don't have to answer any of the questions above if you don't want to but I'd just like to know the opinions of everyone about youth clubs such as GSA! Thanks for your time!
there is a gsa at my school. I'm not in it, don't really see the point in it. I'm also not "out", and I wouldn't want to deal with rumors, etc.
I suppose I don't understand what you mean by not seeing the point. Wouldn't you want your school to at least tolerate such a thing so that if you did come 'out' there wouldn't be rumours? I guess I do get what you're saying, but it's kinda confusing for me at the same time. Anyhow, do you know if your school's GSA is trying to do anything to improve conditions for them in an educational enviorment?
I direct this thread to all those of you who are/have been involved in GSAs. I wish to get involved in one. The problem is that my school doesn't have a GSA. However, I know of other local schools that have GSAs. I want to get involved in those. (one of those perhaps, but i'd be open to more than one). I was wondering if this is commonly seen with GSAs. Do some kids do this? Is this considered an acceptable practice? Thank you for your help.
. I don't remember if anyone her has a GSA? but you can always check with the source. Gay-Straight Alliance Network About Gay-Straight Alliance Network I am certain that if you got in contact with another schools GSA, told them that you were thinking of starting on and asked if you could go to one of their meetings, what are they going to say? The only thing I can think of is that schools liability. Which they shouldn't object to as they probably host foot ball teams who are more likely to get hurt. I'd say, go for it. .
I think liability issues may fall into play if it's at other schools, even though it's an extra curricular activity. But ask around anyway. Or else try befriending someone who's involved in a GSA group and get them to tag you along with them.
Do you know that all the GSAs around you actually meet after school? i just know the one at my school meets during lunch, so we don't really get people from other schools just popping in hehe
maybe we could have a bit more of an explantion about what GSA's are for those of us that don't know, I know theres a link, just a quick bit of imfo as well! S
