Do you give blood?

you know, i don't even know what blood type my husband or daughters are. dave refuses to give blood for some reason. i don't think he ever clarified it. but i'm not going to pound him into the dirt over it. that wouldnt' be effective.

 

I don't even know my blood type, to think of it... I think I should find out one sunny day.

 

so, why can't you give blood? i don't get that. is it because you haven't been in the us long enough or something? sounds bizarre.

 

Because I have been to countries in Northern Africa (Egypt) and Central America (most of it) which are disease prone... so no no no to my blood!

 

ahhhh. too hard to test for malaria and such, i guess. i forgot about that. anyone who has travelled there is turned away.

 

My dad can't donate because he had jaundice as a young boy.

I can't for a couple more months, since I got a tattoo back in Sept. I think it's only 6 or 9 months here after a tattoo or piercing, not a full 12 (used to be 12, but I think they changed it)

 

And something I did not know. A man who has had sex with another man can't donate in the US or Canada.

 

or a woman who has had sex with a man who has had sex with another man.

 

I really wanted to give blood and planned to when I turned 17...

But I've got really poor blood circulation so it's not exactly a good idea....

 

Someone told me I can't give blood if I smoke pot. How do you find out what your blood type is?

Yep, something about the risk of AIDS. I've heard they're re-evaluating some of their requirements which would be nice so that, well, gay men can give blood too, or bi men, or women who've been with bi men. It's kind of... well, I understand the rationale behind it but there are lots of gay/bi men out there who are safe and clean and could give blood.

I've donated blood since I was 18. It's always such a hassle coz I have stupid veins that like to hide and it always takes forever for the nurse/doc to get the blood going and that means massive bruising everytime. But it's worth it so I don't mind.

I've donated blood a few times... My mom and I actually, in the last 7 or 8 years, have gotten into the habit of donating blood on or around Valentine's Day. (Get it? Blood? Heart? anyone?) Don't ask me how or why this started, but we thought it was amusing (guess u had to be there) and it became an annual thing...
