Are you the type of person who brings "stuff" home, and then maybe uses it, or if not, just stashes it somewhere, and lets it pile up in a corner, drawer, closet, basement, attic, or garage ? There are many second hand stores in most any city. Do you utilize these outlets to recycle unused items, and help others get the things they need at an affordable price ? Or, do you just keep piling up anything that comes your way, maybe you'll find a use for it someday ??? The mountain just gets higher and higher, and you just get heavier, and need a bigger and bigger moving van, if you ever want to go anywhere. When my children were little, I told them that we didn't really "own" anything, and that they could think of material things as just floating by us in a river, and if we needed any item, we could just reach in and get it, and if we didn't need it, we should toss it back in the river. I taught them to inventory the "stuff" they had accumulated, and think hard about whether they needed it or not. We were constantly passing things on, and trying to "keep an open hand", and not cling to "things" if we had no use for them. This keeps your own life simple and light, and also helps other people to have what they need. I love to simplify, and do it on a regular basis. Do you.???
Nah, I never managed to get attached to material things. (Other than my guitar... I love that old piece of shit).
I read on the forums many people trying to figure out what the problems of the world are. I think people having unused materialism is a major problem. The big corporations are fueled by the fact that people all buy new products, then just stash them in their houses or storage garages rather than give them away when they upgrade some technology. I knew a woman who had 4 new brooms down in her basement and I needed one, and I mentioned this fact, and she couldn't part with one of her brooms. Where does this tendency to cling to our possessions come from.?? Sure, we paid good money for them, but if we no longer use them, what good are they gathering dust and mildewing in some dark corner.? I have rarely bought anything from a new store, and I have 5 children, and we have managed to purchase almost everything we have second-hand, so we don't really mind passing them on, since we didn't have to sell our soul to buy them in the first place. I have always been a little angry at people who hoard things. I want your stuff, and so dig it out of your basement, attic, and storage areas, and give it to a second hand store. There are alot of financially poor people who will appreciate your generosity, and you will be en-Lightened. !!!!!!!
I think used materialism is more of a problem... people usually buy stuff that they will use, and there is so much useful stuff out there. People eventually get addicted to buying shit... look at Ebay... it's immense.
say bus lady .you bring that bus down here to oysterville and I'll load it up with 100 hefty bags of clothing donated to me by thrift shops. You can then go all over the place and be social dropping off clothing everywhere. it otherwise may habve ended up in the landfill. Fact is I pulled a lot of it outta the thrift shop garbage containers, in fact thats all there was in a huge container. some of it brand new, leather coats I sold on ebay to help pay for the meds to fight my cancer. what do you think about that cupcake? My whole property looks like a diasaster area, anyone willing to move here has free rent while they help me get rid of a helluva lot of stuff. electriacal water hookups available for RVs. thanks and happy new year Honor Seed www.honorseed.com for some pics of me and my place, also check out the hats on the music page those were in a free box at the thrift store.
I have been called a pack rat. But the only things I would never part with are: My stereo (8 speaker Marantz, record, 8 track, cassette, CD, AM/FM) My collection of records and 8 tracks My Goya guitar My 1970 Konica T camera My 1968 Chevy Impala with a soon to be rebuilt 300hp 307ci (5.0 liter) (I’m restoring it for when I can drive in 13 months) Every thing other than that is expendable, so does that make me a collector?
Well To tell you the honest Truth I am somewhat of a "Packrat" I keep things then like throw them somewhare and lose them. And When i dearly need something I wouldn't be able to find it. It gets annoying but I am trying my best to be organized and To Keep what I need and give what I don't. Glower
I'm such a packrat. I don't throw anything out (unless it has the ability to rot or smell bad.) because right before throwing it out I think "Hmm...I could use this to make art." Blocks, old clothes, electronics (I must have 15 pairs of broken headphones!) cd's, boring books, shoes...you name it. I also collect -good- books, dvd's, I have a lot of scarves... eh. But they're all useful...? My room doesn't look too bad for the wear. There's a lot stuffed onto the shelves in my closet and on my bookshelves, but i've worked out a kidn of system. lots of those plastic bins (under my bed.) and cute decorative boxes to store crap out of sight.
oh i've lived by the whole "we never really own anything" motto. and i still do, and i'm a packrat for my animals, =]. i own eleven sweet indiviualistc kitty cats. i don't think i could ever be rid of them. they are like children, so yeah, them. and all of my music and my guitar. i could live in the clothes on my back. i happen to really love this one particualr grateful dead shirt and this one particular flowy tie dyed rainbow skirt, =] and my purple dead bear bandana, lol.
I usually bring home leaves and flowers and sea stones and shells intending to make smth nice with them but i never do it and they just litter my room
i cannot say that I am not materialistic, but I can say that I am not revolving my world around stuff.......but there's certain stuff that I really like to collect: vinyl/cds vintage clothes art books surfboards(but I am willing to sell the ones I dont ride anymore) good movies----only the best
