"Adultism is a predisposition towards adults, which some see as biased against children, youth, and all young people who aren't addressed or viewed as adults. Adultism is popularly used to describe any discrimination against young people, and is distinguished from ageism, which is simply prejudice on the grounds of age; not specifically against youth." Where have you come across Adultism in your own life? I hate the Adultist sterotype that says: "I am a whining teenager, who,as all teenagers do, has imaginary problems that come from growth hormones"
lol i misread your title i thought it said "adult swim" ~_~ part of being a teenager is being discriminated against-i used to be followed around in stores when i was 16/17, guess they thought i was gonna steal something. lol i love when you walk in the store and they're right on top of you- "can i help you?" actually what they're saying is "dont steal anything i have the police on speed dial" you just gotta wait it out like the rest of us did, its a lot shorter than you think! ^_^
i hate that, because i don't want to be old with a stick up my ass, looking down my nose at everyone. i like being young. let me enjoy it, goddammmmmit! i think every generation has the chance to evolve to a little higher mental capacity than their parents, since the universe is expanding, and more information becomes available, and society overall evolves. not that every young person uses their mental abilities . but if i have kids, i'm gonna treat them like i want to be treated being 16 when they're 10-12. i remember being about 4 years old, pissed off at everyone who talked down to me. my dad would constantly tell me i had a better vocabulary than most adults he knew, but as i grew up i learned to dumb myself down and alter my speech so older people wouldn't consider me pretentious. i think that attitude stops growth because the kids believe adults when they tell them there are things they just can't know until they're older. i know that's what happened with me. it was so frustrating. but now i'm pretty sure it's bullshit.
Anytime I hold the door for someone older than me and I don't get a thank you it really chaps my ass.
The limits are rather idiotic. Most predispositions only encourage the behaviours that are frowned upon. At the same time... be patient children, for one day... one day... you will be an adult... nothing will really change... but you can refer to yourself as an adult. Doesn't bother me too much personally... I do wish I could drink in the states, I'm so used to drinking in bars and places from living in other countries... Silly laws.
hey, your as old as you feel. some of my friends saw the beatles on ed sullivan way back in '64. actually, i hear from them more than my other "young" friends-they're in the "my boyfriend/girlfriend is my universe" stage
I held a door open for a whole group (about 12..) of older people the other day, only one said thanks, half-heartedly, under his breath. But I can't say that my generation is any more courteous. Unfortunately, there are just as many self-centered morons in my age group as every other one. Adults dislike the youth because the problem of immaturity DOES exist.
Immaturity exists in every generation... this generation is just extra spoiled and dumbed down. I do not expect a thank you when I hold the door open for someone, yet I always thank someone when they hold the door for me.
prismatism, i really like how you put everything i really agree with you on alot of it attitude definitely deters people from either acting more or less mature or growing up, if someone expects you to act immature that’s the way you're going to act as the next generation it is our job to evolve, become more intelligent and take over the world from the older generations, that's what we're here for to keep the world evolving, no one wants to think that they’re going to "expire" and they're useless, alot of adults have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that even in our immaturity we're still more developed than they were at our age, and that comes from the fast paced society we have now, allowing us to intake knowledge so quickly as the next generations we have so much knowledge to intake, and so much progressing to do, but alot of people don't like progression because it involves change i think alot of ageism, along with other 'isms' is just based on the fear of something, or the ignorance in not understanding it
I believe that we have the illusion of being more developed. Any other generation, especially the Romantics, Impressionists, and the people of the Great Enlightment would have used this endless amount of information the internet provides for us so much more beautifully and efficently than we do. People in this generation take all of the positivity the world has given them for granted, and that saddens me. Instead of learning something new everyday on this endless web of information people use it for such carnal desires such as porn and cheap entertainment. Imagine the social anxiety and polical vibrations of the 60s mixed with the internet... so much more would have been done, so many more people would have been a part of the "revolution", so to speak. Sadly intelligence is not something that is gained, but something that is inherited... and this generation does not desire to gain knowledge for some odd reason. This generation can be characterized by many things... a dominating one is laziness. People who do attain this knowledge mostly use it for personal benefit and not for the common good. The world might be more developed, but this generation still has a lot of mental and spiritual growing to do.
i think you're right. and the fear of being wrong. if you hold something true in your reality, you can't just let someone come along and tell you it's not true in theirs... you have to shut them out...
i agree pavel, just in general younger generations are intended to keep evolving whether or not our generation is doing that is debateable...our world does keep evolving, will the laziness of our generation win out, or will people start taking action, the world goes in phases, no one can learn anything unless they want to learn it but the want to learn is certainly something i've found to be given by our elders...no one will want to learn if the people intending to teach us don't want to teach us..
It seems every generation takes the innovations and social advances of previous generations for granted. I for one am very pleased at how the younger generations have adapted and utilized the Internet and related communication technology. Remember this is all pretty much still in its childhood or even infancy still. Your generation grew up with computers as young children. Hell I never touched a computer terminal until college and didn't really use one until more than a decade later. So we came to the technology as adults, and therefore were only concerned about adult uses for the technology. You kids have found so many new ways to exploit the technology to the extent that today YOU are the ones determining not just the future of the Internet, but of all communications media, advertising, socializing, etc. Things are changing so fast, what's hot this year will be old hat the next, then abandoned in a few more. In fact this site will have to adapt to keep people coming here in the near future, as the lure of other more techie sites bring in the savvy young people. It's a big challenge. The problem comes when technology outpaces morality, as is currently the case on the Internet. Today's hottest thing is LIVE cams and the young are flocking to them, showing off their cam skills as well as their bodies. Is this the future? Children exposing themselves on the Net, live? So today's kids are learning morality from their peers over the Net. They are taking control and exploiting each other in the process. I think this will lead to the dehumanization and objectification of people in a pervasive way that we have never seen before. One likely result will be even more control of the Internet by the gov't. They can already see ANYTHING they want that exists on computers, so files will grow on each one of us, to be used against us should the need or desire arise. The bottom line is the Internet has just become one big playpen for unruly children. So expect even MORE control coming from adults in the near future. Enjoy this freedom while you can, cause change is coming...
I think it's more of a playpan for humans, not just children. Children might seem to be the most dominant group of the internet, but that is only because they are the most openly social. ...and the government keeping data on me? Ahh... what do I care. Even if I will be famous one day (which won't happen)... how can they use it against me? Ha, yes... I go to pornotube to look for wierd porn and e-mail it to my friends in a very heavy metal band so that they could project it behind them in shows. ( found some dinausor porn... priceless!). Yes, I post about drugs, and even do them....shite! So what... let them collect all of my information... from my credit card numbers to the size of my penis... I just hope they are happy having it. I agree though, kids are learning morality from thier peers on the internet, but no more than learning morality from thier peers in real life. Live cams... ahh, porn will always be porn... it is not exploitation if both parties are all about it... it's just harmless fun... sex is way overrated and overemphesised in modern culture. A body is a body, if you get a boner out of a body... then... good for you! More control from adults? Over the internet?...nah, this is a world... it is impossible to control.
