When I first see a person, I find I usually judge about whether they seem to be a real "hippie" or not by their hair, or lack of it. I just do this automatically, I believe it is an instinctive survival mechanism. I know some people will object to the obvious "labeling" of people here, but I think we all do it, even unconsciously. A longhair doesn't necessarily indicate to me a definite, genuine "hippie" (there are exceptions), but short hair, permed hair, dyed hair, a shaved face, legs, armpits, etc, just makes my intuitive-hippie-indicator-meter register "most likely not". Am I being prejudiced or narrow-minded to think that a true, authentic "hippie" would just relax, let their hair just grow naturally where it wants to, not resist human nature, and just " LET IT BE" ????
Well, I have long hair, but it's been dyed for 20+ years, permed and otherwise abused, and I shave everything else. I feel that someone's state of mind is more important than being natural as far as judging whether someone is a hippy or not. I guess, in your opinion, I'm not a hippy, but that's okay. You are entitled to your opinion just like the rest of us, and I love ya anyway! (even though I don't know you from adam, lol)
My friends call me a "hippie," which I guess I agree with, and I have short hair... I don't know, it's easier to manage than long hair (from what I remember). I chopped off my locks in 8th grade (about 3 years ago) because they were so damaged, and I've been trying to re-grow it since (I have no patience).
I have long hair. I don't think i've had even a trim in about a year. I need to either get a trim, or just go ahead and get some locks. Yea i'm contemplating them :| I don't dress like a hippy though. I just dress in what I like.
Hippies are very silly beings. I myself am Pavel, or otherwise... God. I do have long hair, but does that make me a hippie? No! It makes me a constitutional sect of the monarchy!
lol ok, this is gonna sound weird. i have short hair, but, uh, i havent shaved my legs in 2 months. and every time i sit down to do it, i dont have the heart to! what is up with that? i never used to be like that until recently! (i still shave my pits tho )
You are not the only one who has done this. I ran into a number of freaks back in the 60's and 70's who automatically labelled me a nark or FBI spy because I did not have long hair. I have never worn my hair long, as I have curly, wiry hair and don't look very good with an afro haircut, which is the only thing my hair will do when long. I don't wear it long now that it is grey -- I would look like a moldy mushroom if I did.
U R wut I think U R automatically labelled me a nark or FBI spy because I did not have long hair. I have never worn my hair long, as I look like a moldy mushroom if I did.[/QUOTE]
ABE, I think that the hair and its care IS a subcultural signifier, and yeah, my eyes are pulled to the long hairs in a room, but I know several people who embody values that I respect who look like button-down types: one's a lawyer for ecological causes, another works for a university and has a dress and appearance code, you have school teachers who can only be so unkempt without the boards/ admin getting involved. Some grow such scraggly hair that they keep it short (although one found dreads a way around that) and some, of course have pattern baldness. what really trips the radar is someone trying too hard.
4got meh secret baldazz pigcrowd dress code , got tangled up, way up, in meh real uncoded dreadlockz.
So you are one of the exceptions I mentioned.! You have long hair, but you also set yourself apart by the stinky feet, the gaseous indentity, and the angry monkey thing. First one might notice or hear about the longhair, then the other indicators, I am sure, would set everyone straight. Theres no confusion !!!!! LOL
Ok nowow, Pacific Northwest Seaport-Rural Washington-Converted Schoolbus Age: 54 Female, were Yoh tink uh in diz hierarchy uv yoh imagination.
Yes, I know this is so true. I know there are many very beautiful people who are, as you say, button down, and short haired etc., who do embody all the values I respect, who are contributing to building a better world, in jobs that require dress codes. I try hard not to judge, but like I said, I do it automatically,(eyes are pulled to the long hairs in a room), yet I still look for and seek to find love in everyone. I really don't know and interact with very many people, and have not, in recent years, witnessed much of the broad spectrum of human kind. There is a certain innocent spirit apart from the cultural conformities, that would not be compelled to cut, shave, and otherwise remove hair from where it grows. There is something pure in this acceptance of oneself in such a natural state, and I am very attracted to that.
OnlyOne, this might be a question of sorts, but I can't figure it out, so I can't answer it. And, I don't think your sig pic is a hippie baby, because its hippie mother would probably have breastfed it, and thus it wouldn't need a bottle or pacifier, so even though there is the long hair on top, still NO HIPPIE !!!!! (although there are always exceptions)
LOL I neither consciously categorize myself nor set myself apart. I wear my hair long because I like it that way. It's to grow as long as God will grow it. My feet aren't particularly noxious in aroma... the name is a Frank Zappa reference. I am who I am... if that makes me a hippie then I assure you that it's purely coincidental. If one wishes to think of me as belonging to a particular cultural subdivision then as long as it makes them happy I'm ok with that.
