Yes indeed Christmas is a Christian Holiday. Thats why its called 'Christ'mas. I know this for a fact because I just got back from celebrating Christ at a Christ Mass with Christians. Pretty neat the things you learn eh Cozmo! So Merry Christian Christmas to you and everyone else here!
Do your research and understand that the holiday has it's origins in a pagan festival celebrating the winter solstice...you've been lied to. Show me (cite chapter and verse) where it commands Christians to celebrate Christmas in the Bible. The Bible has plenty to say about following the traditions of men and being led astray by false doctrines in the latter days.
LOL.. sorry Cozmo but I long since knew about Pagans who ALSO had a celebration on the same day. Geepers.. you almost CANNOT pick a day that doesnt correspond to a holiday somewhere by someone else in some other era lol! Theres no 'lies' or 'secrecy' to anything: Absolutely Romans had a Pagan celebration on Dec 25. You bet, Christians are exactly who recorded this too! YES. Its part of CHURCH HISTORY that we know all about it. Christians (many who were ex-pagans) DID NOT WANT TO CELEBRATE Pagan things. Thats why we have CHRISTMAS INSTEAD. Once again, the very reason Christians made a Christian Holiday on Dec 25th is BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT CELEBRATING THE PAGAN FESTIVAL. Sorry to laugh but come on.. its pretty much as obvious as can be here.
How did you become such an expert in subterfuge? :H Oh wait I think I know, The Christian Handbook on stratagem and advanced techniques on how to twist facts, figures, and logic, to fit within the narrow framework of christian doctrine. Hotwater
Let me state this again, more clearly if I can: The Christians deliberately, knowingly, purposefuly instituted their own holiday (which they called Christ Mass) on the Pagan Holiday. I have to admit the reason I accept that theory is based on Church tradition and other historical precidents where Christians deliberately took their old Pagan holidays and turned them into Christian ones. Now, having said that.... The other understanding has it the other way around. Christians being the FIRST in the Roman Empire to celebrate on Dec 25 (based on their calculations for the B-day). LATER, A Pagan festival is instituted, either by chance or by trying to appropriate the Christian one. Ok. http://www.touchstonemag.com/docs/issues/16.10docs/16-10pg12.html Dont worry. It really doesnt have to be dueling theories either. Its probably the same as everything else in history. Either developed as they did. Christians had the idea Jesus birth was around there. Late December. Pagans here or there probably had traditions at the same time. Pagans were converting to Christianity. Later (around 270 AD) Pagans 'Officially Instituted' a festival. Later the Christian Holiday becomes 'Officially Instituted'. But none of this matters. Christmas is a Christian Holiday. Im not 'arguing' this. Im telling you I am a Christian, who attended Christ Mass where we celebrated Christ. Yep, I know you just cant believe that but it actually happened. But then again it was on the Evening of Dec 24th? So the 'magic pagan influence' didnt turn it into a non-christian Christ Mass until after Midnight?
I find your honesty very commendable Especially your willingness to accept that Christians chose to incorporate (or bastardize) some traditional aspects of Norse mythology, and other pagan rituals from old europe into the celebration of Christmas. But does that openness extend to many of the stories and parables found in the bible? :H Hotwater
Your intellectual dishonesty is not commendable For starters, you are not in any position of 'explaining' or 'interviewing' Christians or anyone else on common historical knowledge and their own traditions. Or in other words: Christians tell you how this came about and you get to accept or admit to it. I think what might have happened is that you started off with a very naive (ignorant?) misunderstanding. Somehow you were led to believe that Christmas was instituted by Jesus or his Disciples, and that, All the trappings, symbols and traditions are 'exclusively' Christian. Then, When you learned the truth you (wierdly) decided you must 'expose' this myth. Uh no. Christians did not 'officially' declare Christmas a specific Holy Day (Holiday) until some centuries later. There are a bazillion traditions, decorations, seasonal themes, analogies, dress and festival suggestions. So for example I will show you how it works: Lets say that some Germanic peoples used to decorate trees? Now lets say they decide they are now Christians. Ok. Now lets say they decide that this year they will not be worshipping any trees but instead want to make a symbol of the Trinity Nature of their God. Yes. They take the same tree and use it as a way to reflect accordingly. They record this information and then THATS HOW YOU KNOW ABOUT IT. Because CHRISTIANS TOLD YOU THAT. You are not 'telling them' what they informed YOU about in the first place. YOU can 'admit' or 'accept' what THEY TELL YOU. I hope that helps?
What I asked was that you cite for me chapter and verse where God commands us to Celebrate christmas in the Bible...if you can't, don't bother with a historical argument or what actually amounted to quasi-intellectual ramblings for your ego's sake. Remember in my original post what I said about following the false doctrines of men? The Bible is the final authority for all things related to worship and service to God. "...and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth." John 4:24
At NO TIME is there ANY reason for me to find you Christmas in the Scriptures other than the Infancy Gospels. Absolutely wrong that I have any requirement to 'find it chapter and verse' and in NO WAY are you 'cancelling out' or 'nullifying' Christmas. Suck it up - Early Christians picked a day to celebrate Christs birth. Period. It happened and it still happens. Here is what YOU need to do to demonstrate how false your argument is: YOU find ME anywhere that Christians celebrating Christ is forbidden? Ohhhh? Exactly. YOU can answer that for ME and show me ANY problem where Christians celebrate Christ? No, you cant.
Mark 7:6-7 "...This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." A man-made 'holiday' even with the most honest 'intentions' is still not proper worship in the eyes of God. Matter of fact, according to 1 Samuel 15:22, He prefers obedience above all other forms of worship, even sacrifice. The actual word for the of mixing religious practices is called syncretism...there's no way you can justify the adoption of all of the pagan symbols with proper worship. See Deuteronomy 12:32... "What thing soever I command you, obsserve to do it; thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it."
Its this simple: Christians are absolutely free to worship and celebrate Christ. Its considered 'good'. Thats what happens when Christians get together and celebrate Christ at Christ Mass. Simple. Its so simple and yet you just want to keep pretending there is something which would FORBID us from celebrating Christ? No, you dont even believe that. But you are free to let God know you forbid yourself from celebrating him on Christmas. By all means you have to live with yourself after you call Christian symbols 'pagan' and call a joyous celebration something 'wrong'. You have to live with that.
