Well, it is that time of the year again. Some cultures call it Yule, Jul, while others call it Sol Invictus, Winter Equinox, or Christmas.

Which one do you adhere to and why?

Do you understand the origins and history of the holiday that you choose to celebrate?

I am not a believer in any of the Abrahamic religions (christianity, islam, & judeasm). I am a priest, but not a pagan as I do not believe in any gods, nor am I an atheist because I do believe in a Supreme Dreamer of all that we call Reality. I accept all as rituals, and reject all rituals as systems of belief.

To me, the ritual of celebrating the coming of the winter equinox is vital to the human psyche as we are aware of the shortening and lengthening of days which does cause changes to our bio-chemical production in our brains.

By celebrating the shortest and darkest of days, our brains are able to produce more endorphines as well as DMT which gives us the strength to begin another season. For some reason, the other animals don't need this... maybe it's our ability to consider what is happening in the world around us and our realization that we have no control over it.

So, what do you do to organically produce a high during this time? What are your rituals?

    I
I can agree about kicking back with some dmt. I just love a cup of DeliciousMintTea, just as you do, Wootier !!!

I just drop out this time of year, try not to go near the marketplace, and just wait until it's over. I guess I ignore it as much as possible, just cannot find anything useful or meaningful about this tradition, whatever it means or doesn't mean. I hibernate until things get back to "normal". !!!!!!

I celebrate Christmas but also recognize the winter solstice by bringing in evergreens and candles next to my nativity set. My mom's german, and the christmas tradition over there still has a lot of pagan rituals mixed in with the christian....

If you are not Christian, do you get offended if someone wishes you "Merry Christmas"?
You could wish me happy hannukha or Festivus or happy saturnailia, but I just really hate "happy holidays"...its just so generic and souless..

The commercialization of this time of year really breaks my heart...I dont get wrapped up in the hoopla. I buy my close family small gifts, because this time of year means spending time with family instead of satisfying our greed for useless crap.

You're absolutely right, so many people today have gotten too obsessed with material objects and probably don't even know the true meaning behind holidays like Christmas and Chanukah. I myself would rather spend time with my family than get a useless material item any day. Luckily this year we are not getting a lot of stuff and are just going to relax, even though my siblings, who are not hippies, are always asking for presents while I sit back and relax. Anyway, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and any other holidays you may celebrate. Peace out! :)

is it bad that i celebrate christmas and could care less about the religiousness?
i like christmas cuz everyone gets happy, everyone gets together and everyone tries to make things pretty.
im still a kid, so christmas for me isnt really stressful at all. i dont particulary like my family(i have no place in it, and they bug me) but thats just angst talking, but its pretty cool to chill with them on the 25th.
my mom always shoves the jesus-ness down my throat every year and i always angry and start telling her that jesus is fictitous. i should stop that, she gets sad.

christmas is so over over exaggerated though, sometimes i think the world goes INSANE around/about it.

most people just use this time of year as an excuse to give and receive material objects and i think thats wrong , i myself do celebrate christmas but in my own way , i spend the time with my friends (not so much my family , alot of them are all about the material objects , i hate that) at either my house or theirs , myself and my friend nick bring our guitars and play music and we just relax with some tea and talk , its nice just to talk and share stories and become closer to your friends , does anyone else not spend alot of time with their families this time of year because of the way they choose to celebrate it ?

I celebrate Christmas because I'm a Christian, but I do agree I think over the years it has become too commercial and people are more interested in receiving than the true meaning. Because the family I live with aren't Christians we usually spend Christmas day just relaxing and having a good time. On Boxing Day however the rest of our family in the country come down to our place and we have like a big reunion. A lot of these are Christians (and I found out not long ago that some are hippies, so I can't wait to meet back up with them) so we celebrate the true meaning on that day.
