    Hey Yall,
Maybe you could answer a question for me. Do they ever settle down even after they are fixed? I have a beagle, lab, chow, akita mix and she is just off the wall hyper and active. We take her for walks evryday a couple of times a day for extended amouts of time. She also has a very large fenced yard that she plays in her and the neighbors dog run the fence line with each other constantly. It is funny because it is like she is on doggy speed constantly. Does anyone else have the same situation? Its not aproblem just going to let her be her self and see if I should do something to help with the overly hyperness so she doesn't run herself in to the ground

I adopted a Beagle puppy (almost 7 years ago) for my Mom and to this day she is still full of energy...though it has leveled out some...for the 3 hours of hard play she will have 3 hours of hard sleep time. With the chow and akita mixed in, I wouldn't expect anything else...those are all pretty "up" dogs. Lots of play time, walks, hikes, socialization and a good yard to roam in should keep her happy...GOOD LUCK!

We have had he for almost two years and evry night she will crash out in her bed at about 10p.m. and wake up at 4a.m. ready to go again, the yard is huge and is covered with her toys. she gets lost of walks and a hour or so of fetch evry night. Her newest thing is to howl outside the back door if we are inside and she wants to play more.

I have an Akita/Chow mix and she couldn't be more polar opposite of your dog. Really laid back. But I also have a lab/mix who, up until maybe 2 years ago, was a freakin maniac. Using the word hyper was an understatement to define him. For 5 years we dealed with his obnoxious behavior. He started calming down as he got older in part because of injuries he sustained from being a freakin maniac dog. I think how energized they are has a lot to do with personality/breed/ and whether or not they have been fixed. How long has it been since your dog has been fixed? Is she only 2? That's still pretty young. Also what are you feeding her and how much? It's can be unbelievable what a diet can do.

I would get her off Purina dog food altogether---Purina One is ok but there are better dog foods out there that aren't full of preservatives and sugar and nasty crap that defintely could effect your dog's behaviour. They tend to be more expensive, but your dog will eat less and it's much healthier.

I'd assume its more the lab in her that makes her wound...chows are usually kinda chill.. not sure about akitas.. and beagles are hunting dogs.. normally dumber than a box of rocks we have a pure bred pup and he gets wound from time to time... but he's a pretty mellow pup... do you have a picture of your dog? and the age has alot to do with it Im sure...

Are you sure on her mix? If she looks like an overgrown Beagle it's hard to imagine her having akita and chow in her. Regardless Beagles and Labs are both very active and she sounds pretty normal. Spaying and neutering don't tend to make active dogs calm.

That is the mix we where told by the guy my brother-in-law got her from. He said that the dad was a beagle and mom was lab, chow, akita. My personal opinion she is that she would be concidered a wlaker coon hound mix.

Interesting. I have found many times people don't have a clue what breeds their dog may be mixed with. IME Shelters/pounds and vets are often not educated enough on different breeds to make a good guess. I got a "Beagle mix" from our local pound once and he grew up to be an 85lb Doberman mix ;)

Walker coonhounds can looks Beagle=ish but Foxhounds really look like "giant beagles". There are two types:

    The English Foxhound

    The American Foxhound

She has the black saddle marking of the walker but the bark of a beagle you never really know with a mixed be. I just know she runns circles around me terribly but she is really great. This week we switched her from a collar to a harnness she is a little easier to control on our walks now and she seems to be more comfortable then she was with her collar
