Mine is a Sony VAIO 40 gigs mp3 which I do NOT recommend. They actually stopped making manufacturing it since it was so doing so bad in sales.
The only good part is that you can compress the songs so it's got a good deal of memory and so far it still works even though I've dropped it on the floor I dunno how many times. In the 2 years that I've owned it, I had to take it to get it fixed once.

I also have a 30G Video Ipod. I hate it. I will NEVER buy another apple product EVER. I wish I had checked out the market more. I hear some good things about the Zoone(sp?)

Well, I have had nothing but problems with mine. Apple customer service sucks and so does Best Buy. I don't even know how many times I have had to bring that thing in, and they still wont consider it defective and give me my money back or replace it with a different one. Apple Ipods are made quanitity over quality. Try finding a replacement plans with these things---I can tell you it's damn near impossible because these things are awful yet nearly anyother MP3 it's possible to purchase one without problem. I remember the last time I brought it back to Best Buy(this is a reasonably small store) and within 10 minutes 6 other people came in with there Ipods, and for 4 of them it was not the first time brining their Ipod back. Ironic? I think not. Look up reviews of MP3 and I guarantee you there are better products on the market. Nope, never ever ever ever again will I purchase anything from Apple or Best Buy for that matter.

I totaly agree! I had the exact same player, 30gig black video ipod. I dont give a fuck waht anybody says those fuckin thigns are built to quit workin. Everybody I know has had somethin go down with their ipod and its just fucked now. Totaly shitty products!!!! Like I said the only people that I've seen not ahve an Ipod malfunction are people who had little nano's or whatver the fuck those useless things are called. Whya re you gonna wate money on an MP3 player thats only 2-4 gigs? Thats terribly shitty! Anybody that actualy lives and breathes music knows that that is without a doubt not enough to store all your shit. Gotta have at the absolute minimum 20gigs and tahts still limiting. Stay away from ipods and small memory mp3 players in general!

Well consider yourself and your friends lucky because if you do a little research, you'll see inconsistencies(sp?) within the product. Even the geek squad at the store admitted to having a lot a problems with them and wouldn't recommend them. Best Buy, I believe, doesn't even sell replacement plans or service plans for the bigger Ipods because it costs more than they are making because so many people bring the Ipods back.

And for the Nano's----they suck too. There was a big law suit about the LCD (which mine also was f'ed up) and Apple, ironically, doesn't replace faulty LCD thus it makes the MP3 even more of a piece of shit.

fuck that you dont need 20gb to really enjoy music. i have 700 songs on my 4gb nano (which works perfectly, btw) and its about perfect. you can switch songs on and off easily enough anyway.

why would you wanna go through the trouble of doing that. Its not realistic or practicle when you have a big library of songs. If I'm going to spend any money on an mp3 player I want it to have a big enough memor to hold my whole library. I dont wanna have to not listen to a song just because the memory isn't big enough or i forgot to add it to my playlist.... Also measuring an mp3 players memory size by the amount of songs it holds is stupid and inaccurate. Its absed on a 3 minute song or somethign like that...most of the songs I have in my library are far logner than that

I've got an old skool Ipod. 4th generation I think. 20 gig, no pictures or videos or anything but thats not what I bought it for. Found it on E-bay for like 80 bucks.
The only problem I've had with it is sometimes the sound will fade out in the left ear. But sometimes it won't, and all I have to do is move it around a bit to get it to come back.

    So on more positive notes:
if someone wanted an MP3 player and needed to use music that already was on a computer (not downloaded from stores)
and was willing to clean it off and put new stuff on (not needing the Library of Alexandia of Music on there) and needed for workouts and driving (lowered headphones or car kit)
what would be good and under $200?

Honestly, for less than $100 bucks more you can can a MP3 that has 30G versus a 2G. Many people don't need 30G but 2G isn't quite enough, and it does get to be a pain transfering and deleting songs. I would strongly advise not even bothering with the smaller MP3s. I would defintely check out the Microsoft Zune 30G for or the Zune for about $250. If you still are interested in a smaller MP3, they both make smaller versions ranging from about $120-180. I would highly suggest staying away from the Ipod Nanos. I think these are worse than the video Ipods. They have faulty LCD screen and they do not replace them even with a service agreement, among other problems. Also, accessories for Ipods seem to be more expensive than other brands.
