hi all, i've got a couple question about new dreads for me.

i take my kids swimming in chlorinated water quite often, a couple/few times a week anyway. i rarely, if ever, dunk my head, but it'd be nice to know i'd be able to do this if the desire ever emerges. even though i do no blatant head dunking, my hair still gets slightly wet from splashing, and the occasional rescue of a toddling toddler ;) will i be able to wash out the chlorine? will i need to wash every time i get even a bit of chlorinated water in my hair?

also, right now, my hair is about an inch off my shoulder length-wise. how much length will i loose by back-combing?

    thanks in advance :)

um for backcombing, it is veyr odd
My hair was about shoulder length if not longer, and when i backcombed some, stayed the same, others shrank to like half ?!. Really though at the end of the day I would say you loose maybe an inch. My hair looked shoulder length when I was done.

As for chlorine, umm. It may look totally lame and n00b but just put on a cap. I do that, who cares what you look like. Just remember that when you first start dreading, your hair is pretty "fragile" the knots at least, so treat them nice.

now i get lots of chlroine in the hair reguardless of whether i wear a cap or not
so from what ive gathered its cool to get chlorine in the hair as long as you wash it out afterward, if its just a little bit (ie splashing) just rinse with some real water and you should be ok
if its a full dunk i suggest washing to make sure you get the chlorine out of your hair etc cause chlorine is mean and evil to hair
but at the very beginnign of the process you might want to avoid chlorine etc for at most 2 weeks just to be safe heh
but it might not be needed idk heh

chlorine actually helps with the dreading process because it dries out your hair. I take my clients swimming every now and then and i like getting my dreads wet. I lost over 6 inches of hair since I started to dread my hair 7 months ago, but since your hair is much shorter you will not lose this much in proportion. Since it is the winter days and the air is much colder and drier, I would put vitamin E on your scalp. Good luck with the dreading process!!

yup get the little pills and crack em open!
    aloe is good
    so is olive oil apparently

Just remember they are oil, so we are talking like a capsul on your whole head, not like half a cup =P

interesting. i use olive oil and/or coconut oil to moisturize my body anyway, so it makes perfect sense to use it on my scalp too. how do i work such a tiny bit in on my whole scalp though? won't it sorta get lost in my hair?

best thing to do is like get a bottle like i use a water bottle. Then I put the shampoo that im going to use in, the oil, and some water and then shake it all up so it mixes up, then use it right away. Just keep shaking as we all know oil and water seperate. Works for me.

huh. Cool. So, do you leave it on your hair for a bit, before rinsing it out then?

um the best way to wash your dreads i found is buy a nice shower cap.

Mix up the concotion and soack in in your hair, then put your hair up in the shower cap. Then do your regular stuff like wash your body blah blha blah blah blah. If you are like me this takes like 30 minutes.

THen when all is said and done, all the soap and oil should be like nice and like seeped into your dreads. Wash out THROUGHLY. Tons of junk will come out =/ But very very clean. And super knotty the next morning.
