Do any of you guys like the band Operation Ivy? I think they fuckin rock! They are truly what punk and unity is about, not pop culture like the Ramones, and not shitty bass playing and "anarchy" like the Sex Pistols. Op Ivy is one of the best punk bands I've ever come across. If you aren't familar, go to www.operationivy.com

Op Ivy is the best to cruise around to in the summer. I swear everytime me and my friends drove somewhere we'd be listening to Bomb Shell. Oh yeah!

Op Ivy is ska, not "punk" although you could argue that ska is a subdivision of the "punk" genre. Op Ivy was always a fav of mine and energy will always be close to me since it was one of the first CD's i listened that was "punk". Great energy, great musicianship, and i've heard their live shows were sick.

Here in orange county, ca not many people have heard of this band. But I must say they are the most talented and creative band I know of (my opinion of course). Jesse Michaels lyiricism and amazing vocal range are unbelieveable. tim armstrong- no need to write anything else, a god in the punk community. Matt freeman, one of the fastest, most creative, and dead on skilled bass players on the planet. Dave mello, a drummer that anchored their style better than anybody else probably could have, despite his small level of experience at the time. Operation Ivy demand respect because of the massive number of shows, and songs they wrote while only being together for abou 2 1/2 years(although over 2/3rds of their music has never been officially released- the bootlegs are amazing though). operation ivy is for me what I think alot of devoted "dead heads" think of the greatful dead- thats is, their music seems like the soundtrack for my life. People above have commented that they believe operation ivy is either punk or ska. while it is true that they have written both punk and ska songs most of their music is classified correctly as "skunk". skunk is a punk-core style of ska guitar coupled with punk bass rythms and drumming in a punk or ska style. it is also a like ska without horns in a sense. their music is not classified as ska-punk or punk-ska. the latter genre(s) is defined as true punk rock music, with ska horns in the music as well (a good example would be the music of voodoo glow skulls). Operation Ivy had a tremendous influence on the east bay scene and the gilman street project. They were inspiration for coun tless bands that got theree start there and if it weren't for them I truly believe that alot of todays punk and ska bands would not exist.

As a side note, there was a relatively unknown band called "the downfall" that feature all the members of operation ivy with the addition of pat mellow (dave's brtother) and I think one other guitarist named Jason (cant remember his last name). they formed after jesse michaels left operation ivy and have released several demos and many bootlegs are availiable of theirt music. It is known that they did get together to record an official extended lenght album of their music right before they split up and rancid was formed. However it was never released. It is said that tim armstrong still has the master copty and will oneday will release it, I sure hope so, because as a diehard fan of OPIVY their music is the next best thing. If you like operation ivy, try to track down a couple of their songs- it is very worth it. my 2 cents have been given.

    LONG LIVE OPERATION IVY!!!!!!
