Dear Folks: Please enoy this poem. I tried to upload it but it wouldn't let me so I am retyping it here. In the original it has gray sand in the background with little penquin feet imprints all over the place.

    SANDS OF CHANGE

I was surfing on the web one day
For an OS to install, MY way
I checked out Debs, and Reds and even Suse
I looked at Mandriva, Fedora and BSD's
    I thought, I might...go for Gentoo
And then to my joy, I found Ubuntu!

I had stumbled on footprints in the sand
Large penguin feet had made a stand
Tux my penguin friend had been here too
He would carry me all the night through
Of typing and slashing and coffee galore
An EZ install he promised...and more!!!

Ubuntu he promised will end your nightmare
Of evil penguins, and chained to your chair!
Installing all night, eyes all a blur!
X won't boot the screen says with a whir.
You awake to blinking and lights all a flashing
You cry "Oh Hell! My install is crashing!!!"

Cricket he said it'll install like a dream
Ubuntu is EZ I'm told by my team
Of Developers and Maintainers and users like you
All swear to its sweetness with its butterscotch hues
You must try it before you lose faith in me
Ubuntu is for humans who wanna be free
Mr Claus says howdy and I gotta go
Surfs up on Maui and there is my floe

Tux was right and I wish him well
Ubuntu works like a charm on this Old Dell
The install was easy and it booted just fine
Maybe I'll try imbibing in some new WINE
Some Christmas cheer on this old box
I guess I'll launch that old Firefox
I'll surf and post to my hearts content
Thanks to a portly, charming old gent!!!

Merry Christmas to ALL and to all a good wave!

    Ubuntu with love, Cricketshadowolf

Peace to all and may Santa/Tux bless all your computing,

    cricketlind

One warning that I didn't see until too late: never edit the /etc/hosts file in Ubuntu. If you do, you're screwed and have to reinstall all over again from scratch. It's by far the biggest annoyance I've ever encountered in a non-Microsoft OS.

Yes, and don't mess with GDM by trying to use a theme and trying to tweak the colors, fonts, etc. It will break the system. I thought I was tweaking the plain, no theme option but I changed the color on Ubuntu Human theme. It kept messing up on the boot. So I reinstalled from scratch. Anyway, I got it running and it has been up for a week this time with no nasty error messages. I was bleary eyed and had been up all night and launched the Open Office Word Processor. Well, I had been listening to Christmas music and "The night before Christmas poem" started running through my brain as I was looking at the background choices and I saw the sand background with little penguin feet. So, I got inspired. I thought I would write a Ubuntu Christmas poem. Since I am a poet. It may not be the greatest poem but I gave it my best shot. I have done better and worse. What can I say?! I got penguins on the brain. Too much coffee and too little Zs. Hope y'all enjoy it.

    Peace, cricketlind

nice poem. its great when inspiration just comes like that.

GDM? i have mine tweaked with 3 themes i built together and custom colors. no problems here. i also have compize installed. i dont think themes could possibly mess up Ubuntu unless you script in a bad string into the gdm.conf, xorg.conf, or custom.conf. the themes are designed to run under the user's limits. if the X server crashes in a loop then alt+ctr+f1 and login as root and do "init 3". then you dont have to have X running to suck up resources while you fix the script.

Is Ubuntu a South African programme?

I believe the founder is in fact from South Africa... I forget his name now though...

Yeah I like Ubuntu except for the crazy stuff they do to discourage one from using a root account. It's like chopping off the user's feet to prevent them from having the capability to walk off a cliff.

Oh and the poem is great, didn't mean to thread-hijack. Well, I did actually, since I thought the warning to be worth it! ;-)
