im getting my first tat fixed when i go in for my second one. (different artist for sure too). so that'll be in mid january.. waaay excited. ;p

is there any standard etiquet for tipping? i was increidlby dissapointed in the customer service at the shop that did my first tattoo.. but of course that wasn't apparent until i was already sitting there for five minutes and the outline was just getting started. needless to say he recieved no tip.
but i have references for my next place, and assuming they're ass good as ive heard, what guidelines should i go by for tipping??

It's really dependant on how much you think they deserve. For a small piece(less than $200) I'd say 15-20 percent is good. On larger pieces, I'd say 20 byucks or so shows you appreciate the work.

Right now, I'm working on a full back piece. I tip about 15 a sitting which I figure covers his food, gas, as cigarettes for the day. At the end, I'm planning on giving him 100 bucks.

In the end, tips are not expected, but very much appreciated. It really is up to you. If you're pleased and plan n coming back, I'd tip him more.

    Peace

    I go by 15-20%.

...And beg to differ about the tips not being expected. I'm pretty sure it's standard that you should tip after a tattoo. Unless the work is very bad and they know you don't like it, then you're under no obligation. Be a little generous if you like the artist and what they have done for you. No standard etiquette - it's just unspoken.

If you see the thread here "I Ink for Brownies", tips or payment isn't always monetary. Although I'd use that with caution.

Sorry to hear about your first experience. My first wasn't so great either and it needs to be touched up and recoloured soon. However I still enjoy the design and the meaning. Good luck on your trip in January!

so im 16, i just lost my best friend, and im sitting with my chin in my chest [incredibly painful] getting this memorial tattoo.
i ask the guy when he takes a break if he's changing colors, needles, just wondering what's up [keep in mind.. 1st tattoo.. and ive never even seen someone get one before]
he answers me in one word phrases like im some idiot who should know this all by now.
needless to anyone else who does me will look like a god in my book, and get a worthy tip.

its just too bad there aren't many artists in reno savvy w/gifts and the like as tips. its aaalll about cash to them.
but what im am i gonna do since cali wont permit tattooing minors. ;p

thank you for your help, both of yah.
