I saw Jimi Hendrix in 67-He was new to the heavy metal thing-His first album had just come out-He was and still is the very best guitar I have ever seen-Clapton-Jeff Beck etc-all good but none like Hendrix-Class act!

A few years ago Pete Townsend of The Who was on the David Letterman show. They talked about all the things Pete & The Who had done. Then Dave asked Pete, "Is there anything you haven't done, but wish you could have?" Pete's answer was that on [same date I can't remember in the mid-1960s] at [some club I can't remember], "I saw exactly what I wanted to do, be Jimi Hendrix".

And what must be one of the greatest stories in Rock & Roll history. 10-01-66: Polytechnic of Central London - Jimi jams with Cream:

Just a week after Jimi landed in England, Cream were playing a show at the Polytechnic in central London. Chandler bumped into Clapton a few days before and told him he'd like to introduce Jimi sometime. Meeting Clapton, of course, was the one promise Chandler had made to Jimi before they left New York. Clapton mentioned the Polytechnic gig and suggested Chandler bring his protege. In all likelihood, Clapton meant he would be glad simply to meet Jimi, but Jimi nonetheless arrived with his guitar. Chandler, Jimi and their girlfriends stood in the audience during the first half of the show, and Chandler called up to the stage and summoned Clapton over to ask if Jimi might jam. The request was so preposterous that no one in Cream -- Clapton, Jack Bruce or Ginger Baker -- knew quite what to say: No one had ever asked to jam with them before; most would have been too intimidated by their reputation as the best band in Britain. Bruce finally said, "Sure, he can plug into my bass amp."

Jimi plugged his guitar into a spare channel and immediately began Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor." "I'd grown up around Eric, and I knew what a fan he was of Albert King, who had a slow version of that song," recalled press agent Tony Garland, who was at the show. "When Jimi started his take, though, it was about three times as fast as Albert King's version, and you could see Eric's jaw drop -- he didn't know what was going to come next." Remembering the show later, Clapton said, "I thought, 'My God, this is like Buddy Guy on acid.' "

When Bruce told his version of the fabled event, he focused on Clapton's reaction and alluded to graffiti in London that proclaimed, "Clapton is God." "It must have been difficult for Eric to handle," Bruce said, "because [Eric] was 'God,' and this unknown person comes along and burns." Jeff Beck was in the audience that night, and he, too, took warning from Jimi's performance. "Even if it was crap -- and it wasn't -- it got to the press," Beck later said. Jimi had been in London for eight days and he had already met God, and burned him.

As fas as I know, there's no recording of that show... but if there were ...

    Peace,

POD-I don't know much about the gigs they did in the UK-The band was new and he had just got together with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding so it was probably pretty rough stuff-They were using England as a practice place as they didn't make any money until they put out the first album and Jimi brought his new English band mates to the US-in 67-The rest is history-They burned their way across America faster then Rumsfeld getting out of Washington or faster then the current Republicans in the House and Senate shredding paper!-Very Fast-Actually with his lightning fingers; the Republicans could really use Hendrix right now to help get all those phony arms aquisitions shredded!-hahah-PURPLE HAZZZZE--ps-click link-if I got it right-it should be his bio-

The thing about Jimi that stood out was that not only was he super loud; alot of groups were getting real loud then but he was loud AND good. The groups like Blue Cheer were deafening and the band Deep Purple had won a spot in the Guiness Book for being the loudest band ever up till then-The decibal level was supposed to be equal to having a 747 take off 10 ft. over your head!-But Jimi was loud yet you could make out what he was singing and he went from pure thunder to mellow sounds and back again. His style was completely unique in that it was always changing and he explored the various sounds that were available from feedback alone-The one thing that amazed me when I saw him was watching his fingers on the frets-They were big hands and were all over the neck-He would play the lead and rhythem at the same time using substained feedback and it was unbelievable as it really sounded like there were 2 or more other guitar players making all that noise.-It was all him and nobody was using pre-recorded phony stuff then-Well-maybe on shows likw Dick Clarks Bandstand they did lipsync but Jimi was never on it. I actually don't think Hendrix ever did tv-I could be wrong but I can't remember ever seeing him on the tube-Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison were both on the Ed Sullivan show but not Jimi-O Ed probably didn't want America to find out what Purple Haze was about! hahaha-I'm still waiting on a good movie on him-maybe someday-

I never saw jimi, but he is indeed the best.

I can only compare it to seeing SRV, I had heard his recordings but live he was SO much more impressive - hearing his albums didnt prepare me to see him live. I was blown away, even having heard his tunes.

And they tell me Jimi was the same, only ten times more amazing to watch!

Stevie was great also-Him and Jimi both madr it look effortless to play those riffs-Some just born with it-I sadly never got a chance to see Stevie before his passing-Then I never saw one of my other favorite bands from the 70s; Lynard Skynard. I did see them after the crash but never with the original members-Ronnie was good and his brother does a good job but-it ain't Ronnie-That band is made of pure musicians. They have lost so many good players now and still keep going-thats great-Southern Pride-I was in shock when we lost the Almann Bros.-another great guitar player gone too soon-Man-Heaven is loaded up with lots of great talent!

Rob - Jimi did do an appearance onthe Dick Cavett show-twice. I got a copy of it....He plays "Hear My Train A-Comin" with the Dick Cavett Band!! Pretty funny, but great, too. And then he came back with A Band of Gypsys...Mitch, Juma, Billy Cox, all on Cavett's stage! And there is the interviews....he was such a humble, gentle person.....

Yeah, last weekend I bought a Jimi Hendrix CD with the Star-Spangled Banner on it and LOVE IT! I wish I could've seen him do those guitar riffs at Woodstock. But, I wasn't born back then. *sigh* It must've been great at Woodstock back then. Jimi was the best, I bet. Peace out!
