Hey guys, I just got accepted at UW-madison and I was wondering if any of you go/went there or know anyone who did. I'm looking for any opinions on the school really. I've visited it and so far it is my first choice school for next year.
I used to live in Mad Town, and I go back around twice a year. It has one of the best all around scenes. Music, people, shops, capital, the lake..... My dad went to UW and loved it. If I was in your shoes and could afford out of state tution I would go for it.
Im still in high school but are basketball team has made it to state 7 times in a row. We all go down and rent a hotel rooms we never got busted and we partied hard every night. I really liked Madison and if I wasnt already going to UW Oshkosh I would very much concider going there.
Hey man, I live in Madison. I went there for a year and a half, and turns out school just wasn't for me. You will like Madison if you enjoy any of the following: Large consumption of beer, reguardless of date/time. Liberals (Madison is one of the most liberal towns in the nation) Not smoking in any bars (New smoking ban, it sucks) Beautiful women. Interesting people. People of every type flock to madison, and they all seem to fit in. Large classes. Sadly enough, a lot of classes will be taught by a T.A. who doesnt care if you are there or not. Some classes you may see your actual professor, some you may not. Hockey (Mens and Womens nation champs of '05) So my whole point of this is: Hell, its better than staying in Illinois
Thanks for the opinions, especially on the city itself because i only spent a day there so far. A liberal town is always a plus for me. Yeah we have the no smoking ban in chicago along with every other kind of ban (cell phone while driving, and stupid things like restaurants serving foie gras)
You know, I find that rather offensive. In many cases, the TA cares a fuck-load more than the actual prof. As an undergrad, I had some really good classes taught by graduate instructors, as well as some really good TAs. And, of course, now that I am a TA, as are many of my friends, I can say flat out that you don't know what you're talking about in that comment.
Madison is a cool town. As with almost any university, there are some very highly regarded departments and some that are just kinda there because they're expected to be there. What are you planning to study? I was absolutely amazed at the number of languages they teach there... But, then, my only experience with Madison was when I was there for an intensive summer language training program (a whole year worth of language classes crammed into 8 weeks!), so it's not surprising I found that cool!
I'm not really sure what I want to study, I'm going in undecided. I was thinking about pharmacy/chemistry of some sort but I really have no idea.
Are you thinking of just paying out of state tution? Or are you going to try to establish residency somehow?
if I could afford it I would DIE to go to Madison. Ive ALWAYS wanted to go there. I dont live there, or go to school there, but i live in Wisconsin and have been to Madison many times and I LOVVVVE it there... I wish I could afford to move there, its pretty much the only place in Wisconsin that I feel is just absolutely amazing. Madison = LOOOVE
Madison is amazing... The city has the greatest vibe.. and the school rocks... I know a lot of people that go to uw madison... however I am going to attend the technical college... Madison is a great place to live and I know my friends love the school... Im sure you will enjoy it!
I didnt mean EVERY t.a. is a jackass and doesnt care, but when you walk into a physics class and the prof comes in and tells you the tests days, and tells you to have a good semester, and his TA will be teaching, its a little discouraging. I also had some good TA's and good prof's, but i had a fair amount of worthless ones too.
Not too far off track frieden..it shows how big of a party school it is. I've also heard (not been) from several people that halloween there is pretty much the craziest event in the nation.
Thanks for the geat posts. Yeah I have heard about halloween and heard it was a huge party school. I was kind of afraid it would too big of a party school, but then I thought- I also heard almost every other school is, and I havn't found a school around that had a town that I liked as much. ps. Apples + Oranjes- If you really want to move there, I hope you'll find a way.
Yeah, my mom and dad went to UC Berkeley and discouraged me out of going to a big school because you really are just a number with some of the best professors in the world, but really thought by some unknown TA. I've only been to Madison once, so can't really comment but I decided to go to UW-Stevens Point and love it. Out of state tuition is a bitch considering I come from California and my folks make to damn much, but damn is Wisconsin a beautiful state. I hate the cold ass weather though.
I love madison, I wish I had the grades to get in. Hopefully, I'll be able to pull a transfer from Milwaukee. Good luck, keep us posted as to how you like it Maybe all us 'sconsin kids can chill sometime
