OMG, the term metro-sexual is a pet peeve of mine. It has nothing to do with sexuality that hetero doesn't convey. Am I alone in being irritated at this new word that is being used? As if being hetero-sexual was some sort of a bad thing. Is anyone a big supporter of the term metro, and if so, why?
That term makes me chuckle. My flatmate claims to be a metro-sexual. He makes me chuckle a lot too.
It's because they look gay. I don't little prissy metro-sexuals. Those types of guys irk the hell out of me.
Tree-hugger, you called it pretty well. There used to be a term for guys like that, pretty boys, or prissy boys. But now they're metro-sexuals. But If you really think about it, even most gay guys don't look gay, so should there be another term for them? Maybe ohio-sexuals or something? I think the reason it gets to me is the sexual part of it, and that people use it like it's some big deal or some profound statement that they have acheived.
It's just a word.... to be honest, I think it's quite an appropriate term for a lot of folks, gay or straight. And it's true, not all gay guys look or act what's considered to be typically 'gay' behavior. Metro sexual is just a term that can be used for someone who's either straight or gay.... To be honest, I'd rather hear people use the term 'metrosexual' when describing someone, rather than saying that a guy 'seems/looks gay'. I would think that the latter would be offensive, and I know gay people who consider the latter to be derogatory. (sp?) So 'metrosexual' is much more of an ideal term. And besides, like it or not, language evolves and there's going to be a zillion words that not all of us are fond of. I personally am annoyed at this whole 'hip hop' talk or whatever the right term is... 'shiznit' and 'biatch' are fucking hilarious, and I never take anyone seriously who uses those words in their vocabulary.
*shrugs* I always took metro to mean that the person just put some effort into their appearance and maintenance, above and beyond the "average" guy, it's not terribly offensive in my book
But see, there's the problem, it is not used to describe someone who is gay or straight, just someone who is straight. And it is just saying that they look gay but they're really straight. here's the def: a heterosexual male who has a strong aesthetic sense and inordinate interest in appearance and style, similar to that of homosexual males and I know that there are plenty of words that will come and go that not all of us will like, and this happens to be one of those for me since it doesn't match up with it's individual words. Since I can't do anything to change it, atleast I can complain about it. And that will keep me alittle busy today so I can make it through the first day without cigs.
